Annapurna Base Camp Trek in November

Annapurna Base Camp Trek in November

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek in November is a mesmerizing adventure that offers some of the best weather conditions, accompanied by breathtaking mountain views. It allows trekkers to enjoy the crisp mountain air in serene Himalayan settings. Thus, November is the perfect month to explore the diverse beauty of the rich Annapurna region

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek is one of the most iconic treks in Nepal. Its classic trail takes you to the foothills of the world’s tenth-highest mountain, Mt. Annapurna (8,091 meters). You will begin with a short drive from Pokhara to Nayapul while traversing the charming Nepalese countryside. From Nayapul, you will start your trek, but trekkers can choose a different starting point.

The winding route within the Annapurna Conservation Area takes you from the beautiful rhododendron forests to alpine meadows, barren landscapes, and glaciers. You will traverse beautiful Gurung and Magar villages like Birethanti, Ghandruk, Chhomrong, Sinuwa, Deurali, and more. The Annapurna Base Camp, situated at an altitude of 4,130 meters, lies within the Annapurna Sanctuary. You will reach the base camp via Machhapuchhre Base Camp at 3,700 meters. The overwhelming feeling of witnessing the towering Mt. Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli, and more in front of you is indescribably breathtaking.

November offers clear skies, sunny days, and temperatures that make the ABC Trek more enticing and rewarding. The dry trails and excellent visibility make this moderately demanding journey a more comfortable trekking experience. It is also a great time to experience the cultural richness of the region. Let us explore more about the ABC Trek in November.

Why November is a Special Time to Consider the Trek

November is the last month of autumn, and the brilliant weather and views make it a special time to consider the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Autumn (September to November) is the peak trekking season in Nepal. It has one of the most favorable and stable weather conditions, the air is crisp, and the temperature is moderate. There is little to no rainfall, so the trails are in fairly good condition. The golden glow of autumn makes the scenery more enchanting as you trek in the Annapurna region. Similarly, the visibility is unmatched, offering unparalleled views of the snow-capped mountains against the blue skies in the backdrop. You can clearly see Annapurna I, Annapurna III, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli, and more.

ABC

Another reason that makes November a special time to join the ABC Trek is that the trail starts to become quieter. You can hear the sounds of flowing rivers and birds chirping. The wildlife is also active, and you may catch sightings of Blue Sheep, Himalayan monal, and more. Also, the cooler weather offers a comfortable and relaxing trekking experience. Likewise, the teahouses and lodges are relatively less crowded. It also means the services are better. You can relax by the fire stoves and enjoy a warm cup of tea at the end of the day after a long trek. By late November, light snow may start to fall in higher-altitude areas. The light snowfall and the stunning views make the scenery more magical. Hence, November is a special time to consider the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

We arranged for a 13 pax group for the ABC trek with Harka. Even with a big group size, Harka and his team took good care of us. The itinerary was customized based on our needs and fitness level. Top-notch service was provided throughout our 10 days in Nepal. Our guide, Hari did an amazing job ensuring all of us were able to cope with the altitude and long trek well. During the trip, we requested some changes to the itinerary and they were able to accommodate our last-minute request. Would totally come back to them if we are planning for EBC and recommend it to those who wish to visit Nepal.

Unforgettable and its a real adventure

Haari, our tour guide, was great. He is very friendly, patient, accommodating with everyone and a mountain of knowledge about the Himalayas (very very enthusiastic about EBC, haha). He was well prepared with first aids and brought us to places to get gears and stuff that we missed out before our hike. He made plans ahead and keep us informed, totally made our ABC adventure so much more enjoyable and relaxed. The porters were super helpful and thoughtful, despite carrying our bags around the mountains they keep us entertained with their carefree personalities and great dancing skills 🙂 (yeah, they partied at one of the teahouse we stayed). OH did I mentioned, one of our member left his camera at the previous teahouse we stayed and only realised when we arrived at the next accommodation (after 12 hours) and one of the porter volunteered to return and pick up the camera for our member, and I’m sure he was sprinting and down 6 red bull and came back in 5hours. We were very lucky and blessed indeed. Haari’s brother, Harka is the operation/ owner of the tour agency and he was also very kind and did a fantastic job in ensuring our last few days in Kathmandu a pleasant one. We had good conversations with everyone of them and all in all a great experience and a wonderful times in this beautiful country.

our honeymoon trekking

My husband and I spent our honeymoon trekking to Annapurna Base Camp and Harka was our guide. We were so pleased to have Harka as he was the perfect guide for us. Naturally he has excellent knowledge and always gently guided us into the correct decision. We were quite worried about spending so much time with someone we didn’t know. But Harka had the magic ability to know when to leave us in peace and when to spend time with us. He was very gentlemanly, with perfect manners and as I said an innate ability to know what to do. He wasn’t too distant nor too friendly. We did see other guides who didn’t get this balance right and who if they had been with us would have affected our trip for the worse. Harka was just perfect for us and I would recommend him to anyone.

I and my girlfriend took a ABC Trek

In the march of 2012, my girlfriend and I took a trip to the Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal. We have hired a guide Harka Gurung , a local guide (26), who was recommended by my friends.First, he has sent us the list of things to take with us, this information is very valuable for us, since we know what to take with us. The weather conditions were pretty rough, but we did not freeze and need anything. Harka is very fond of safety, starting from the recommendations about the food and water and ending with advice was and how to pass the Avalanche area, steep slopes, and so on. He was very nice to us and told us a lot of stories about Nepali habits, culture, and history; he was always joking and did not show any signs of angriness when we were going to slow or wanted to have rest. Harka went all the way with us and without him our travel would not have been so nice and safe.I definitely will choose home as a guide for my next trips to Nepal and recommend him to anyone who wants to feel comfortable and nice during the trek.

Highly recommended, friendly family-run company.

We booked a 7 day Annapurna Base Camp trek with Himalaya Trip in Sep. Communication when booking was excellent and they were very accommodating to fit in with our dates and pick up/drop off locations. The manager, Harka, was very quick to respond and provided good information about what to take. On arrival, Harka met us at our hotel in Kathmandu and explained the full plan for the trip giving us all our tickets and trekking passes. He also met us in the morning to ensure we got on the correct bus to Pokhara where we would meet our guide.

The guide and porter were very good: both were very friendly and couldn’t do enough to make sure we were comfortable and safe at all times. We were particularly impressed when we asked to change the plan for the last day of the trek and he gave us a few options and rebooked our accommodation and transport plan to fit. Even though the porter spoke little English he was friendly and helpful throughout.

Himalaya Trip clearly a local, family-run business and I would highly recommend booking directly with them as it was better value for money than going through an agent in the UK and also supports their local community. We will certainly use them again for future trekking adventures in Nepal.

ABC Made Memorable by Harka Gurung and Himalaya Trip !

Our little group of three were introduced to Himalaya Trip and its Founder, Harka Gurung, from another Malaysian who had trekked in Nepal in 2018.

For our trek to ABC, I found Harka and his guide, Om and his two porters, Buddhi Man and Samsher, all Gurungs from their home state, to be exceptionally professional, courteous, friendly and accommodating at all times.

We quickly warmed to the Gurungs’ easygoing nature and friendly, no-nonsense dispositions, made all the more memorable by Samsher and Buddhi Man’s mountain songs and spontaneous dancing whilst on the trail!

I cannot therefore recommend Harka, Om, Samsher and Buddhi Man more highly for your next trip to this beautiful land as Nepal Hidden Treks will definitely be my first port of call when I next visit, hopefully with my children.

The defining feature of Harka and his men are that this is a family business for the Gurung tribe which places employment, professional standards and career opportunities on equal if not higher measure than commercial profit, which ultimately benefits the lucky client.

Weather Conditions in November

Although November is an ideal time with favorable weather, it can vary depending on the altitude. It is usually warmer in lower-elevation areas but slightly colder in higher-elevation areas. The weather in November is mostly dry with a lower precipitation level, which also lowers the humidity level. The temperature in November is moderate but the daytime and nighttime temperatures differ slightly. The days are sunny and bright, but the mornings and nights are colder. High winds are common during the noon hour, but it starts to become chillier during this month.

Take a look at the day and night temperatures along the route of Annapurna Base Camp in November:

LocationElevationDaytime TemperatureNighttime Temperature

Jhinu Danda1,690 meters16°C to 20°C5°C to 9°C

Dovan 2,600 meters10°C to 14°C0°C to 4°C

Annapurna Base Camp4,130 meters2°C to 6°C-8°C to -12°C

Crowds and Trail Conditions

The crowd traffic at Annapurna Base Camp in November is moderate. October is the peak trekking time, and the route is crowded as it is one of the popular trekking destinations in Nepal. The trail and teahouses are full of fellow trekkers. However, with the beginning of November, the crowd becomes thinner, and you can enjoy a serene atmosphere. The accommodations aren’t empty, but they aren’t fully packed either. You do not have to fight for the room or flights. En route, you may come across a few trekkers with whom you can exchange friendly greetings.

The trail conditions of the Annapurna Base Camp are relatively dry and stable. November falls in the post-monsoon season, so there is no need to worry about wet and muddy trails. The vegetation and forests are lush, and autumn foliage further enhances the beauty. As the month progresses, the temperature continues to drop. Hence, the trail at higher elevation is covered by frost in the early morning. Trekkers may also come across light snow patches around stops like Deurali, Machhapuchhre Base Camp, and Annapurna Base Camp.

By the end of November, the autumn season transitions into winter. It is not fully winter, but the pre-winter season. The trail sees fewer crowds, but the teahouses are still open. Those seeking a quiet ABC Trekking experience should consider November. It’s the best time to enjoy the adventure in peace and take in the breathtaking views.

Challenges of trekking ABC in November

The Annapurna Base Camp is suitable for trekkers with no prior experience as well as seasoned trekkers. The trek is not an easy walk in the park. It is a moderate venture that requires decent fitness and good health. It takes 7 to 10 days to complete the Annapurna Base Camp Trek route, during which trekkers trek for 4 to 6 hours on average each day. Similarly, trekkers must hike over varied terrains and climb uphill and downhill on more than 3,000 stone staircases. It will test any trekker’s physical strength, stamina, and endurance. The favorable weather of November makes it slightly easier and comfortable to trek to ABC.

Another challenge of the venture in November is altitude sickness, as trekkers have to ascend to an altitude of 4,130 meters. Lack of acclimatization and dehydration can further increase the risk. The risk is relatively lower than the Annapurna Circuit Trek or Everest Base Camp Trek. However, ABC is still a high-altitude trek. The cool weather of November can mask the symptoms of altitude sickness. Hence, trekkers must take adequate rest and allow for acclimatization days, and take proper precautions. The days are also shorter at this time of the month. Thus, trekkers must start their trek early to reach their day’s destination before it gets dark.

The weather in higher altitude regions can change rapidly, making it unpredictable. In November, the temperature is slightly colder. In late November, there can also be frost in the morning as it starts to snow lightly in higher elevations. Therefore, trekkers must carry warm clothing and insulating layers to stay warm. It is also highly recommended that trekkers check the weather forecasts before the journey. November is an ideal month for the ABC Trek, but trekkers must be prepared both physically and mentally to overcome the challenges that lie ahead.

Tips for a successful trek in November

We have prepared some tips for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek in November to make it a successful venture. Take a look:

  • Understand the difficulty of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek and do your research. Prepare for the venture both physically and mentally, ideally at least 8 to 12 months in advance.
  • Select a reputable, government-registered trekking agency with a suitable itinerary. Hire a licensed guide and a porter to accompany you on the journey.
  • Carry the right trekking gear and clothing for the ABC Trek in November. You can either buy or rent the equipment. Remember to pack first aid supplies and personal medications.
  • Always stay hydrated during the trek and eat a nutritious diet. Avoid excessive smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages.
  • Ascend to a higher altitude gradually and take adequate acclimatization days. It helps to prevent altitude-related sickness.
  • Since there are many trekkers on the trail in November, it’s best to start early to avoid the crowds. However, trek slowly at your own pace. Do not overexert yourself, as it can lead to fatigue and increase the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Always stay on the designated trail and follow your trek guide’s instructions. If you experience any discomfort or uneasiness, notify them immediately.
  • Nepalese society is conservative, and you will also encounter several religious sites along the way. So, dress modestly and respect the local culture. Always ask permission before taking photographs, and remove your shoes when entering temples and monasteries.

Accommodation and Food on the Trail

The trail to Annapurna Base Camp is also famous as the teahouse trail. It is because the standard accommodations along the route are teahouses and lodges. They are simple and basic but offer the authentic Nepalese mountain hospitality. Most often, these teahouses are run by the locals themselves, which further enhances the cultural experience for trekkers.

One may find a single room with an attached bathroom in the lower regions. However, the rooms are typically arranged in a twin-sharing or dormitory style and are poorly insulated, with wooden beds and mattresses. The hosts provide you with blankets and pillows. Other than that, the rooms are furnished with limited furniture. Bathrooms are mostly communal and Asian squat style. The dining halls are where trekkers not only dine but also socialize. Usually, the halls are decorated with pictures, and a massive stone stove is installed in the center of the room for heating purposes.

Trekkers will be able to use the internet and access hot water and shower services for an additional charge. However, the service can be non-existent in higher-altitude areas, such as Annapurna Base Camp. These teahouses also offer meals to the trekkers. Dal Bhat is a staple of Nepalese cuisine, so you will likely have it for lunch and dinner. Other meal options include eggs, oats, porridge, Tibetan bread, soup, salad, momo (dumplings), thukpa, chow mein, selroti, dhido, gundruk, tsampa, stews, chapati, curry, noodles, sandwiches, burgers, pizza, spaghetti, and more.

Conclusion

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek in November is an ideal time to experience the grandeur of the famous trail and its diverse landscapes. You don’t have to worry about muddy, wet, or icy trails or sudden rainfall. Similarly, the other weather-related challenges and risks, such as landslides and mudslides, are minimal. The dry trekking route makes the challenging uphill and downhill trek slightly less demanding. Moreover, the clear visibility offers unobstructed and crystal-clear views of the Annapurna range and surrounding mountain panoramas.

Whether a beginner or a seasoned trekker, November is an excellent time for trekking to Annapurna Base Camp, there are comparatively fewer trekkers on the route, so you can enjoy the journey more peacefully. It is also the best month to explore the natural beauty and rich culture of the region. The ABC Trek in November beautifully combines thrilling adventure with the raw beauty of the Himalayas and cultural immersion.
