Australian Camp Trek Details

The journey to the Australian Camp Trek begins in Pokhara, a charming city located in the western part of Nepal. From Pokhara, you will travel via Pokhara-Baglung Highway headed westbound towards Kande, starting point of Australian Camp Trek. This distance from Pokhara to Kande is 30 kilometers which is approximately 45 minutes drive from Lakeside. Our private vehicle will pick you up from your hotel in Pokhara and you will be driven to Kande. Your hiking journey will begin from Kande as you head eastward taking the foot trail through the village.

Australian Base Camp Trek Route

Australian Camp Dhampus Trek is a short hike that begins from Pokhara, offering a delightful mix of natural beauty and cultural immersion. Starting from Kande, the trek begins with a steep ascent, which may challenge even the fittest trekkers. However, the effort is well worth it as you make your way through dense forests, passing by traditional farmhouses and experiencing the warm hospitality of the local communities.

As you continue your trek, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Annapurna mountain range. The highlight of the trek is reaching the Australian Camp, a picturesque campsite surrounded by the Himalayas. Here, you can witness the magical sunrise over the mountains, painting the sky with hues of red, orange, and pink.

The panoramic views from the Australian Camp are truly awe-inspiring, with Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Annapurna, and Mt. Machhapuchhre dominating the horizon. The locals call the Australian camp, “Thulo Kharka” which means big pastureland for buffalo and cows. In the past, this camp used to serve as a camping ground for trekkers venturing for Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The duration of your trek from Kande to Australian Camp is about 1.5 hours through easy going foot trails.

From the Australian camp, you will further make your way towards Dhampus, another prominent village in the foothills of Annapurna mountains. The trekking duration is about 1 hour and you reach a hilly hamlet snuggled with teahouses. Dhampur portrays a typical Gurung and Magar village which has been built for tourists. There are lots of accommodation and dining options in Dhampus and this will be your final destination before starting your return journey. Lots of trekkers name this trek as Dhampus Australian camp trek, owing to the destinations included.

You will have your lunch at Dhampus witnessing the amazing Himalayan views of the north. Post-Lunch you will begin your descent journey towards Phedi where our vehicle will be waiting for your arrival. From Phedi, another 30 minutes drive will take you to Pokhara to your hotel where your Australian camp trek ends.

Duration of Australian Camp Trek can differ but it can be completed in as little as a day, making it a perfect weekend getaway. However, for those who wish to immerse themselves in the beauty of the region, we can customize the Australian camp trek itinerary based on your preference Below is a sample itinerary for the Pokhara trek to Australian Base Camp.

Period I: Pick up at Hotel, Drop at Kande

  • Pick up at your hotel in Pokhara
  • Drive via Baglung-Pokhara Highway to Kande (30km, 45 minutes)

Period II: Kande to Australian Camp

  • Begin your trek from Kande to Australian Camp. (1.5 hours)
  • Marvel at the stunning views of the Annapurna range along the way.
  • Reach the Australian Camp and witness the breathtaking sunset.

Period III: Australian Camp to Dhampus,

  • Further hike the rural landscape towards Dhampus
  • Enjoy mesmerizing view of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains

Period III: Descend to Phedi, Drive back to Pokhara

  • Begin your descent from Dhampus towards Phedi

Trek start and End

This trek will start after your breakfast at your Hotel and bring you back to your Hotel after the trek.

Transportation

A private vehicle will come to pick you up at your Hotel and drive to Kande in 40 minutes to 1 hour. The trek will end at Phedi, and from Phedi drive back to your Hotel 30 minutes by private vehicle.

What to wear 

The highest elevation of this trip is 2060m. You need to wear a light jacket, hiking shoes, a hat, a small bag, trousers, a T-shirt, a bottle of water etc. If you are doing this trip in the monsoon, you are recommended to bring Umbrella.

Best Time to Trek Australian Camp

This is a day hike which requires no permits for trekking. You dont require any permit for Australian Camp trekking.

We organise small group private trip. If you are 2 or more people in your group, you may book any dates.

Travel Insurance

The travel insurance is need in case of any emergency. It is recommend to have.  If you are doing short  and low elevation trek, you can do normal insurance. But if you are doing high altitude or adventure trek, you should have emergency rescue.

Last Minute booking

Normally, trekkers plan the trip before 3-9 months.  Some trekkers decide the trip in last minutes. It is also possible to book your trek at last minutes. For the Last minutes booking, you need to make a full payment.

Tipping

Tipping is highly expected. Our staffs try their best during the trip. After the trip, Tipping is expected. It is not fixed amount or percentage. We recommend the tipping according to their services.

Safety

When you are travelling, the safety is most important. For the safety of our clients, we trained our guide and porters. They are all register trekking / Tour  / Climbing guide and experience porters.

Extra personal expenses

For the extra expenses, it is good to bring USD / Euro / Pound Sterling or ther currency. You may change to Nepali Rupees (NPR) at Tribhuwan International Airport or near your Hotel in Kathmandu. You will use only Nepali rupees during the trip.

Nepal visa

Accept few countries , you will get on arrival Nepal’s Visa at the Tribhuwan International Airport or Nepal board. I recommend to fill up Nepal Visa online form and bring it with you. It will be faster and easy for you and visa fee is recommended to bring cash US dollar. You can’t pay by using credit card.

Trip extension or Itinerary Disclaimer

We organize small group private trip. The trip extension is possible but you have to figure out when you booking the trip.

Group joing and Fixed departure

Most of the time, we have small group private trip. Group joining or fixed departure will be available only at the clients request. 

Luggage store

You are not taking all the lugguage on the trek. You will take only necessary gears on the trek and rest of the gears, you will store at your Hotel in Kathmandu or Pokhara or in our office in Kathmandu. All the Hotels have free luggage store services. It is more convenient to store at your Hotel.

Responsible travel

  • Ask permission to photograph people.
  • Do not remove or purchase antiques, it is illegal.
  • Avoid wearing revealing clothes and avoid outward displays of physical affection.
  • Do not anything to disturb environment or wild animals.

Domestic flight

Normally, domestic flight is not on time. If you have international flight with domestic connection flight. It is always better to keep some gaps.
