Overview

If there is a trip that combines two iconic trek destinations of Nepal, it is the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Poon Hill. It is a unique adventure that offers a classic trekking experience with culturally rich immersion. This high-altitude journey circles the legendary Annapurna massif and takes you to the famous Ghorepani Poon Hill for a magical sunrise view.

Unlike other classic treks in Nepal, the Annapurna Circuit Trek (ACT) stands out with its diverse landscapes, climates, and culture. Similarly, Poon Hill is popular for its beautiful mountain views and mesmerizing sunrise just at an altitude of 3,210 m. Combining these two treks into one single journey creates a rewarding and unforgettable Annapurna Circuit with Poon Hill Trek. The journey begins with a scenic drive on the winding mountain road from Kathmandu to Bhulbhule. From Bhulbhule begins your trekking adventure.

The classic trail takes you through desert-like landscapes, wind-swept valleys, colorful rock formations, and towering cliffs. You will traverse Kaligandaki Gorge and wander past traditional Tibetan settlements, age-old monasteries, colorful prayer flags, mani walls, and chortens. You will also trek on part of an ancient trade route that once connected Nepal with Tibet. Similarly, you will cross the challenging Thorong La Pass (5,416 m). It is the highest point of the ACT, with Poon Hill, and one of the main highlights of the journey. The landscape gradually changes as you continue forward.

You will trek past green pastures, alpine meadows, rivers, streams, and waterfalls. It gradually enters the lush forests of rhododendrons, oaks, bamboos, and britches. The scenery changes with your journey and joins the Ghorepani Poon Hill trail. You will pass by traditional Gurung and Magar villages and green paddy fields. Throughout the journey, you can get spectacular views of towering peaks like Annapurna I, Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Gangapurna, Hounchuli, Chulu East, Chulu West, and many others. You can enjoy the mountain view even more immersively during the golden sunrise from the Poon Hill Viewpoint.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Poon Hill is more than just a high-altitude trek. It fills your senses with colors, lights, and culture. The trek is an extraordinary blend of natural diversity, cultural richness, and Himalayan adventure. From desert-like landscapes to sunrise panoramas, join our 14-Day Annapurna Circuit Trek with Poon Hill to experience it all by yourself!

On the bright side, we can get stunning views of Mount Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, and Gangapurna. Similarly, we can see Marsyangi Valley far below. Passing by stone houses and prayer walls, we will reach Ghyaru.

From here, we will trek on the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Poon Hill route, which goes through the mountainside. Annapurna circuit trek with poonhill

Why the Annapurna Circuit With Poon Hill Trek Is a Great Choice?

The Annapurna Circuit with Poon Hill is one of the few adventures in Nepal that offers a high-altitude trek with a low-altitude sunrise. It also combines rugged adventure that circles the Annapurna massif with classic cultural immersion. The trek is a great choice for those who want an authentic and complete Himalayan adventure.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Poon Hill is an accessible destination with a safe and well-marked trekking trail. It is suitable for first-time as well as seasoned trekkers with reasonable fitness and proper preparation. Trekking through the diverse landscapes within Nepal’s largest conservation area is an incredible experience. You will trek through lower subtropical forests with rhododendrons, oaks, and firs, to alpine meadows, yak pastures, and high-altitude desert landscapes. Hence, the scenery keeps changing, and you will experience different microclimates.

For those who want to feel a thrilling sense of exhilarating adventure, Thorong La Pass will not disappoint you. It is one of the highest trekking mountain passes in the world, with an elevation of 5,416 meters. Standing on top of Thorong La, you will get to marvel at the panoramic views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Tilicho, and other surrounding peaks. Similarly, there is a deep sense of personal triumph. The Annapurna Circuit with Poon Hill Trekking trail also takes you to the iconic Poon Hill Viewpoint. Watching the golden sunrise and its rays touching the snow-capped peaks of the Annapurna ranges will leave you enchanted.

One of the reasons the ACT with Poon Hill journey is unique among commercialized treks is that it feels like traveling through two different eras of Himalayan life. At the beginning of the trek, you will explore the trans-Himalayan landscape, heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhist culture. It feels like stepping back into time as you traverse wind-swept valleys, ancient monasteries, and wind-carved cliffs. Some trekking trails in areas such as Manang Valley, Thorong La Pass, and Kali Gandaki Valley follow the ancient salt trade route. So, you will be trekking through a living Himalayan trade history.

The route also passes through traditional Gurung and Magar villages with beautiful terraced farms. The stark contrast between the two worlds feels surreal. Despite the challenges of the trek, the mesmerizing sunrises, unforgettable views, and enriching experience make the Annapurna Circuit with Poon Hill Trek a great option.

Lodging Experience and Mountain Meals on the Annapurna Trail

With the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Poon Hill, you will get to experience authentic mountain hospitality. The lodging experience along the route is mostly a traditional teahouse system. They are small and mostly family-run homes. The facilities are basic with limited amenities, but they are not just places to sleep. These teahouses provide you with a front-row seat to glimpse at the local lifestyle.

Multi-generational families run many teahouses along the Annapurna Circuit and Poon Hill trekking route. So, you can see a bit of the history of the region during your stay. The teahouses are made of stone walls with mud, wooden beams, and slate roofs. Rooms are usually shared, and bathrooms are communal. The teahouses will provide you with a bed, a mattress, a pillow, and a blanket. The communal dining halls in the teahouses are the most lively. There is a wood-burning stove in the middle, where trekkers sit around and converse. You can exchange stories, interact with locals, play games, and more.

There are no heating facilities, and the rooms have poor insulation. The temperature drops at nighttime, significantly at higher elevations. So, carry a sleeping bag just in case. The teahouses provide charging, internet, and hot showers/ water at an additional cost. Note that as you go higher, the comfort and facilities decrease. Fees for charging your electronic devices may also increase as most teahouses run on solar power. Facilities like the internet and a hot shower may be nonexistent. Most trekkers use wet wipes or damp clothing to clean their bodies in high areas.

The meals on the Annapurna Circuit with Poon Hill trekking trail include staple Nepalese and Western cuisines. Dal Bhat is common for lunch and dinner. It consists of rice, lentil soup, curry, and pickle. It is the ultimate food, rich in carbohydrates and protein, to keep you energized throughout the trek. Typically, meals are prepared with local, seasonal ingredients. The variety of meals that you may find along the trek route is as follows:

  • Breakfast: Tibetan bread, porridge, tsampa, chapati, toast with butter/jam/honey, boiled eggs, omelets, muesli, corn flakes, and pancakes.
  • Lunch: Dal Bhat, fried rice, momo, noodles, chowmein, thukpa, sel roti, pasta, spaghetti, French fries, pizza, soup, and salad.
  • Dinner: Dal Bhat, dhedo, chapati/ roti, curries, noodles, stew, thukpa, pasta, spaghetti, pizza, soup.

The availability of these dishes can vary by region. In the lower-altitude areas, there is more variety, as more ingredients are available. In the higher region, the vegetables and ingredients are limited. Thus, the dishes are mostly heavy on carbohydrates. Dishes like Dhal Bhat, thukpa, and soups become more common. Meat is available, but it may not be fresh. So, while on the journey, it is best to have vegetarian meals.
For drinks, you will find options like tea (black/ milk/ ginger lemon honey/ green), coffee, soft drinks, juices, chang (local millet beer), and raksi (local alcohol). While on the trek, it is best to avoid excessive caffeine and alcoholic beverages.

The Golden Hour at Poon Hill

Poon Hill Viewpoint sits at an hour’s hike from the beautiful Magar village of Ghorepani. It sits at an altitude of 3,210 m. Despite the relatively low altitude, the viewpoint offers one of the most gorgeous sunrise views. The moderate hike and accessibility further make it a popular sunrise viewpoint. But the real magical show begins 30 to 60 minutes before and after sunrise, known as the “Golden Hour.”

The Golden Hour casts a soft, warm golden-orange glow over the mountains and valleys. Its warm light enhances the natural patterns and visual depth of the peaks, snow, rocks, and forest. The sun’s low angle casts a long shadow that adds depth. It brings out the natural contours of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The mornings are usually misty and hazy. When the first rays of the sun hit the rising mists, they create the most magical, dreamy scene. The view looks otherworldly and captures the hearts of any onlookers.

You need to arrive early at the Poon Hill Viewpoint to watch this magical scene unfold before you. The time can change slightly depending on the season. Aim to reach at the spot around 4:30 to 5:30 AM. Like the saying, “the early bird catches the worm,” arriving early allows you to witness the entire transition from night to day. You will experience the changing light and colors of the morning. It is not only the changing lights that will capture your heart. The peaks of surrounding mountains, such as Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Hiunchuli, and others, also glow like molten gold. The valleys below also light up with the gentle, warm light.

The serene environment, fresh mountain air, and the golden views make it a sensory experience. It is also a perfect spot for photographers to capture stunning photos. Witnessing the Golden Hour from this iconic spot makes your Annapurna Circuit Trek with Poon Hill more unforgettable.

Passport & Visa

You will need a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining before expiry. You can get a visa on arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Those traveling overland can obtain their visas at land border immigration checkpoints. It is also possible to apply for a tourist visa online via Nepal Immigration. The visa fees are as follows:

  • 15-day visa: USD 30 per person
  • 30-day visa: USD 50 per person
  • 90-day visa: USD 125 per person

It is possible to extend the visa for a minimum of 15 days for USD 45, and USD 3 per day for each additional days. In case of delays, you will be fined USD 5 per day.

Travel Insurance

It is mandatory to have travel insurance for high-altitude treks, including the Annapurna Circuit with Poon Hill Trek. The insurance must cover high-altitude trekking and elevation up to 5,416 m. The trek takes you to the areas of the Annapurna region that lack proper infrastructure and medical facilities. In case of emergency or sickness, helicopter rescue is the only way to provide immediate medical assistance. The cost of evacuation can be expensive. Hence, the insurance must cover a helicopter rescue operation.

Additionally, your travel insurance must also include medical expenses and trip cancellation/delay. The cost can range from USD 100 to 300 for a 30-day plan. However, the price can vary depending on the provider and coverage. There are international providers such as World Nomads, IMG, and Allianz that offer comprehensive travel insurance for treks like the Annapurna Circuit with Poon Hill.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

The ACT with Poon Hill trail officially enters the Annapurna Conservation Area from Besisahar. It is Nepal’s largest conservation area, and the entire trekking trail lies within its area. The Annapurna Conservation Area is home to a variety of flora and fauna. It is a habitat for more than 450 bird species and rare animals like snow leopards, Himalayan Tahr, Musk deer, and many more. It also has delicate and diverse ecological zones. To conserve the pristine habitat, biodiversity, and ecology, trekkers must obtain an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP).

The permit is mandatory for all foreign trekkers. Aside from biodiversity conservation and ecological protection, the permit helps regulate tourism and promote sustainable tourism. The fees from ACAP also support the local community projects. The cost of ACAP is NPR 3000 (~USD 25) per person. Trekkers can get the permit from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Expert Tips To Make Your Annapurna Circuit With Poon Hill Experience Better

If you too want to make your Annapurna Circuit Trek with Poon Hill more comfortable and memorable, follow these tips:

  • Choose a reliable agency like Himalaya Trip and an experienced guide. Hire a porter to carry your luggage so that you can travel baggage-free.
  • Pack light and smart. Carry only what you need and avoid overpacking. Carry a trekking pole to reduce stress on your knees during steep ascents and descents.
  • Choose the right season, i.e., spring or autumn, for the best experience. The weather is the most stable, and the trails are in good condition. Include a buffer day in your itinerary in case of weather-related delays.
  • While on trek, drink 3-4 liters of water each day to stay hydrated. Eat healthy, nutritious meals that are rich in carbohydrates and protein.
  • Since it is a high-altitude trek, you need to acclimatize properly. It minimizes the risk of altitude sickness and gives your body time to rest.
  • Start your trek early. For sunrise, wake up before dawn. On the day of the Thorong La Pass crossing, begin early, so you can cross the pass before noon. It helps to avoid the changing weather and high winds.
  • Be respectful of the local customs and culture. Follow the rules and etiquette while entering monasteries or temples.
  • Carry cash as there are no ATMs along the route. Remember, cash is king. The shops and accommodations along the Annapurna route only accept cash.
  • Bring first-aid kits with medicines like Diamox or acetazolamide, painkillers, bandages, etc. Also, carry sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip balm.
  • Research about the trek route and its challenges. Prepare physically and mentally for the journey, 2 to 3 months beforehand. Set realistic expectations and embrace the adventure.

Incredible!

Hi! Im Sara, from Spain!
Good morning!
Yesterday we arrived from our 11-day trekking in Gokyo.
There were 3 people from Spain, and I don’t know how to express how happy I felt.
From the beginning, Himalaya Trip has been attentive to us, with a welcome at the hotel and explanation of the route, rental of necessary equipment, etc.
The most important thing for us has been the ease and comfort with which Ramesh (our precious guide) has taken care of us at all time.
Attentive to the food, to make sure we didn’t get cold, adapting the route day by day according to the needs of the team.

I only have words of gratitude for Ramesh, who I would recommend for any trekking in the world.
In addition to being a great guide and knowing all the mountains of Nepal perfectly, he is a great person, with a big heart.

We hope to repeat in the not too distant future and hopefully it can be with him, since he is already part of our family.
Thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart.

Thanks!!!!

Couldn’t recommend enough

Had an incredible experience doing the Mardi Himal trek with Himalaya Trip. Our guide Jay and our two porters Umesh and Masak were all simply incredible people.

I’m a photographer so always have odd requests for weird areas to access for better angles or even simply just extending time in certain areas and all requests were met with so much help from the team. Highly recommend

Mardi Himal: fantastic trek & wonderful guide

I had an amazing time trekking with Surpa, particularly as this was my first solo trek. Beautiful views doing the Mardi Himal trek over 4 days, Surpa was a great guide who organised everything so well for me, kept me well fed, supported a good pace the whole way and always cheerful. Would recommend, and I would happily have him as my guide again in the future. The organisation and booking with Himalaya Trip was great, really responsive on emails and Harka was so helpful in organising everything and meeting me in Kathmandu for a briefing before the trip. Thanks so much!

Once in a lifetime experience in the Himalayas

Our 4 day Mardi Himal Trek with guide Milan and porter Plekta was a wonderful experience. The manager Harka Gurung met with us over coffee in Kathmandu and briefed us about expectations as this was our first trek. After that our guide met us at our hotel in Pokhara, helped us rent equipment, and handled all logistics in between. Our first time in the Himalayas was unforgettable between all the unbelievable landscapes and scenery, and we were lucky to have MIlan and Plekta with us to experience it all. I can’t begin to describe how ethereal sunrise is over the base camp, but hopefully you’ll be able to experience it soon!
