Foods in 12 Days Manaslu Trek
During your Manaslu trekking, you will have the chance to savor various culinary delights. Teahouses on the trekking trail offer an assortment of Nepalese and Continental dishes, allowing you to experience the region’s flavors. A beloved favorite among locals in Nepal is Dal Bhaat, a nourishing meal comprising rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, and pickles. This dish not only provides nutrients but also leaves you feeling content. Dal Bhaat is typically served for both lunch and dinner; however, if you desire something different, teahouses also offer alternatives like pasta, noodles, pies, or other delightful treats.
Tea houses provide many breakfast options to kickstart your day on a high note. You can indulge in Tibetan bread or choose from soup porridge pancakes or any other morning delicacy that catches your fancy. If you have any specific dietary requirements for Meals during the 12-day Manaslu Circuit Trek, it’s important to communicate them with your guide beforehand so that they can make necessary arrangements with the teahouse kitchens.
Manaslu Conservation Area
The area encompassing the Manaslu range of mountains is even more lively, with diverse flora and fauna. Manaslu Conservation Area sits in the middle of the Manaslu region, encapsulating a diverse range of plants and animals. The dense forests located in the Subtropical and Tropical stretches of the Manaslu trek are enriched with biodiversity. Alongside various Himalayan herbs, this conservation area savors Rhododendron, pine, oak, Juniper, and Caterpillar fungus in abundance. Also roaming the wildlands of the area are Snow Leopard, Himalayan Tahr, Himalayan Monal, Golden Langur, Musk Deer, and several species of birds.
Water Bodies in Manaslu Circuit Trekking
Originating from these high mountains are small streams and glacial lakes that are spread across the region. Budhi Gandaki and Marsyangdi rivers originate from the Manaslu mountain range. Both of these rivers are tributaries of the Saptagandaki River system. Alongside, the higher ridges are filled with pristine glacial lakes. These lakes serve as the origin of the raging Himalayan rivers. The mountains surrounding the Manaslu range include several deep lakes like Kalo Tal, Birendra Lake, and Ponkar Lake. The water bodies located in the area provide a holistic natural experience.
Trek Difficulty of Manaslu Circuit
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is tough because it’s at a high altitude, has rocky paths, and is in a remote area. The difficulty of the trek depends on how fit you are and how much stamina you have. The highest point is Larkya La Pass (5106 m), where you might feel Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) after passing Samagaon.
The Manaslu region is one of the most isolated places in Nepal. Since there are no proper roads, it’s hard to find cell signals and electricity in most areas. The trail to Larkya La Pass is rough and rocky, with a small uphill climb, which makes it challenging. It’s a good idea to start a fitness routine at least a month before your trek.
Do we get Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) during the Manaslu trek
Yes, Altitude sickness is quite common on the Manaslu Circuit Trek, especially at higher elevations like Larkya La Pass, which is over 5,000 meters (16,404 feet). The risk of altitude sickness increases significantly above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) because oxygen levels drop, making it harder for the body to adjust. The symptoms of altitude sickness are headache, fever, nausea, shortness of breath, fatigue, etc. These symptoms occur during the regular Acute Mountain Sickness; however, there are more serious conditions as well.
High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) are two of the serious versions of altitude sickness. In HAPE, the condition affects the hearts and lungs of the victims, and HACE affects the brain of the victim, as both of these conditions can be fatal. Hence before going out to experience the tough high-altitude trek like the Manaslu Circuit. Here are some ways to minimize or prevent altitude sickness during the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
- Proper acclimatization is needed, which means at least a day or two days of rest.
- Trek higher and sleep lower to get used to the lower oxygen levels.
- Stay hydrated during the two weeks of the trek.
- Avoid taking alcohol and caffeine during the high-altitude trek.
- Focus on having healthy diet foods filled with proteins and carbohydrates, and avoid having meats as they might be unhygienic.

Why is a Restricted Area Permit required for Manaslu Trek?
Manaslu Circuit Trek falls in the restricted region of Nepal, which is why the trekkers wanting to trek the Manaslu Circuit must issue a restricted area permit. The reason for issuing the restricted area permit is due to the closeness to the Tibet border, which raises the question of security. The permit also helps efficiently regulate tourists and trekkers and ensures responsible travel practices.
The permit is also a mode of security as the authorities can monitor every trekker’s trek around Manaslu. The trek along the circuit is remote and may sometimes require quick rescue, which is also the reason why guides must be hired. The revenue from permits helps support local development projects and conservation efforts in the Manaslu Conservation Area.
