Traveling to Nepal During Elections 2026

Traveling to Nepal During Elections 2026

Nepal is holding an election on March 5, 2026. It is an exciting time for Nepalese, but the election periods can raise a few concerns for travelers. It is natural to have questions like:

“Is it safe to travel?”

“Will the buses or flights operate normally?”

“Will the tourist sites be accessible?”

Nepal has a strong history of peaceful elections. However, it is crucial to plan thoroughly and stay aware while traveling in the election season. You must also have some understanding of the local political climate and stay informed. Similarly, planning your travel with a reliable travel operator is more important than ever. It will make your journey smoother and enjoyable. There may be minor delays, but tourist services are expected to operate smoothly.

In this article, we will provide you with practical guidance on understanding elections in Nepal, safety during election periods, their impact, transportation restrictions, and tips. So, make sure you read until the end!

Is It Safe to travel to Nepal during the March 5 Elections?

The short answer is “yes.” It is safe to travel to Nepal during the 5 March Elections. As we mentioned before, Nepal has a history of conducting peaceful elections. The country is well known for its peacefulness, even during elections. Safety during the General Election is more about high security than high risk. Moreover, tourism infrastructure is treated as a “protected zone.”

Traveling to Nepal during the election time can be surprisingly more enriching and fun in many ways. The major tourist hubs, such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan, usually follow a normal daily routine during election periods. Likewise, the shops, hotels, restaurants, trekking agencies, and tour operators also mostly operate normally. Regions like Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu are largely unaffected by political activity. These activities are mainly focused on urban and residential areas.

That said, political protests or demonstrations may happen occasionally. But these activities are generally localized, short-lived, and occur near political party headquarters, government offices, or major intersections (such as Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu). The protests also usually follow predictable patterns. In such sensitive areas, authorities mobilize tight security to ensure public safety and manage crowds effectively. So, the major tourist hubs see only minimal interference.

In late 2025, a viral video circulated on social media showing a tourist bus being escorted through the Gen Z protest scene by the locals. It showed that the Nepalese people highly prioritize the safety of their foreign guests even during times of unrest. The action showcases the Nepalese hospitality, demonstrating respect and consideration for international travelers. The video is also a visual reassurance and a clear message to travelers that, even in challenging situations, Nepal welcomes its visitors and ensures their safety.

What makes the 2026 General Election on 5 March safer is that the Nepal Army is overseeing the election security this year. Therefore, urban areas where political activities or protests are mainly held will have a significantly higher military and police presence for safety. Additionally, the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has issued a recommendation letter to the Chief District Officer (CDO) Offices in Kathmandu for tourist vehicle passes (Airport-Hotel-Airport) on election day. Even with a complete vehicular lockdown, special green-plate shuttles will be deployed for international travelers.

It is highly recommended that travelers stay informed through trekking agencies, local news, hotel staff, or guides. Staying aware and taking proper precautions can help avoid areas of political activity. This is not because it is dangerous, but to avoid any unnecessary delays. Therefore, travelers can visit Nepal with confidence during the 5 March 2026 election. You can enjoy a safe and uninterrupted trip with awareness, flexible planning, and respect for local circumstances.

Understanding Elections in Nepal

Nepal is a democratic country, so elections are a fundamental part of its democratic system. These elections are generally peaceful and well-organized events. The Election Commission of Nepal is an independent constitutional body that conducts and oversees the elections. It is also responsible for holding free, fair, and transparent elections across the country.

In Nepal, the elections are held at three main levels: federal, provincial, and local. The federal elections are held to determine the members of the national parliament. The provincial elections determine the leadership of each province. Lastly, local elections are held to elect representatives to municipalities and rural councils. Depending on the timelines and political developments, these elections take place every few years.

Certain temporary restrictions may be placed during election periods to maintain security and public order. Activities such as large political gatherings, restrictions on public demonstrations, limitations on alcohol sales, and control of vehicle movements in specific areas on voting days. These restrictions are usually short-term to avoid disrupting daily life or the travel experience.

Widespread violence is rare in Nepal, especially in tourist destinations like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, and popular trekking regions. Additionally, the security forces are strategically deployed for public safety and smooth election operations. Travelers may need to make minor adjustments to their schedules or trek routes. Hence, understanding the elections in Nepal helps travelers prepare better and plan more flexible itineraries.

Impact on Trekking and Mountain Regions

One of the major concerns of travelers is the impact of the general election on trekking and mountain regions. Fortunately, as mentioned earlier, the key trekking regions are largely unaffected. Voting is held in these areas as well, but it does not usually disrupt trekking or tourism. Most of these areas are remote, far from major political centers, and sparsely populated.

Mountain Regions

Voting booths are set up even in high-altitude settlements. The polling stations are usually small and set up in schools or community buildings within the villages. Also, voting is completed within a single day, so life returns to normal very quickly. During voting, tourist movement is not restricted in trekking and mountainous areas. Trekking services, teahouses, and lodges are open for business. In these areas, the locals remain involved in their daily life, so political events have minimal impact.

Experienced trekking operators plan carefully during the election period to ensure a smooth, seamless travel experience. Therefore, you can traverse the trekking and mountainous regions of Nepal without any worry. You will still get to enjoy adventurous trekking while taking in the stunning scenery and rich culture. With proper planning and a reliable trekking company like Himalaya Trip, trekking in the mountain regions of Nepal during the election period is a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable experience.

Transportation Restrictions During Election Days

Usually, there are temporary transportation restrictions during the election period, especially on the election day. It is standard practice to impose transportation restrictions on election days. The reason behind the limit or ban on transportation is to ensure security, public order, and the smooth running of the voting operations. The restriction can last for several hours or for an entire day.

Road transportation

On March 5, 2026, there will be a nationwide ban on vehicle movement in Nepal as a part of election-day security measures. From public transportation to private vehicles, road travel will be suspended, except for emergency services. Authorized tourist shuttle transfers between the Tribhuvan International Airport and hotels will be permitted.

Please note that vehicle movement is banned from the evening of March 4 until the end of March 5, as per official advisories issued by the Nepal Tourism Board, the Election Commission, and major national media outlets. It includes public transportation, private vehicles, taxis, and long-distance road travel. The special passes for tourist shuttle buses issued by the Chief District Officer (CDO) offices will be strictly limited to flight-related passenger movements only.

From March 2 to March 5, 2026, the Nepal-India land border crossings will be completely sealed for 72 hours. To ensure electoral security, cross-border land travel will be restricted. This could affect the travelers planning to travel between the two countries on these dates. It may affect Indian tourists planning to visit tourist spots such as Lumbini in Nepal near the border. Entry and exit between the two countries will not be possible during these dates, so we strongly advise avoiding land border crossings during these periods. We suggest travelers plan their itineraries either before March 2 or after March 6.

Air transportation

All international flights will operate normally during the election period. The Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu will operate fully, with no restrictions. Everything from airport services to baggage handling, immigration, and customs will function normally. Hence, tourists can arrive in or depart from Nepal by air without any disruption.

Domestic flights will, however, be suspended on March 5, the day of the election. It means flights to destinations such as Lukla, Pokhara, Bharatpur, Jomsom, Nepalgunj, and other domestic destinations will be affected. Only medical, emergency, and government-authorized flights may operate. Therefore, travelers are strongly advised to plan and schedule their domestic flights in Nepal before March 4 or after March 6. Similarly, those flying to mountainous regions are recommended to include 1 to 2 contingency days in their itineraries to avoid any disruptions.

Tips for Traveling in Nepal During Elections

Here are some tips to make your travel in Nepal during the elections smooth:

  • Do not plan or book any inter-city roadway transport between the evening of March 4 and the end of March 5. A nationwide vehicular ban will be in effect. Likewise, do not plan or book flights on the day of the election. All domestic flights are grounded on March 5, except for medical or any other emergencies.
  • From March 4 to 6, the government of Nepal has declared public holidays. All government offices, including permit counters (Department of Tourism and TAAN), will be closed. Thus, secure your trekking permits by March 2. If you cannot obtain the permit before March 3, you may not be able to start your trek on your scheduled date.
  • Tourist shuttles will operate on the election day from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu to hotels in Thamel or Durbar Marg and vice versa. If you have an arrival or departure flight, you can get further information from your trekking agency or hotel.
  • Plan your travel dates either before or after election day. Keep updated with the latest news and government advisories. Your tour agency, trek guides, and hotel staff are an excellent source of real-time information. They can advise you on the safe routes, schedules, and any new updates.
  • Although the political rallies and gatherings are usually peaceful, it is best to avoid them. Stay away from any political events. Avoid wearing clothes or accessories with symbols like the Sun, Tree, Hammer, or Sickle, as these are politically charged party logos.
  • The ATMs can be out of cash or out of service as banks will close for the three-day public holidays. We recommend that you withdraw enough cash by March 3. Make sure you have enough cash to cover 72 hours of expenses. Also, keep a stock of snacks, drinking water, and other personal essentials.
  • Confirm the itinerary with your trek agency or travel operator. Make sure your transportation is booked in advance, and the date is scheduled before or after the election period. Keep your itinerary flexible and allow buffer days.
  • If the local authorities or security personnel approach you, do not panic. Be respectful and comply with their instructions or for security checks, especially near polling areas.
  • There can be slight changes during election periods, which are considered normal. At such times, stay calm and flexible. Also, save the emergency contact information for your hotel, trek operator, embassy, and local emergency services.

Why Traveling During Elections Can Still Be a Good Experience

Although there may be minor setbacks, traveling during election season can be a more enriching experience, as there are fewer crowds in cities and you can personally experience the electoral process and Nepal’s political culture. It may offer unique advantages that may be surprisingly rewarding. There may be temporary changes in locals’ daily lives, but trekking during the election period is unaffected.

Some travelers may postpone their trips due to uncertainty. However, the election times offer calmer, more authentic, and immersive experiences. The usually crowded tourist hubs in major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara are quieter. Travelers can explore the heritage sites, cultural attractions, cafes, and restaurants at a more relaxed pace. Similarly, they can get better opportunities for immersive interactions and enjoy uninterrupted sightseeing. It is the best time for photographers and culture lovers to stroll leisurely through the usually crowded sites.

As for adventure seekers and trekking enthusiasts, trekking in the mountain region is as normal as possible. Teahouses along the routes of the Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu, and other regions are fully operational. Likewise, the guides and porters also offer regular services. The warm Nepalese hospitality and the core “Atithi Devo Bhava,” which means the guest is god, remain unchanged regardless of election events. The election in Nepal will not interfere with trekking plans. These times offer many travelers a chance to enjoy more intimate trekking, including beautiful scenery, rich culture, and mountain hospitality.

Traveling during the election period also offers a rare glimpse of the democratic process and of locals’ political engagement in action. Many travelers may even find it fascinating. They can not only observe the community participation but also understand the social and political culture of Nepal. One can see colorful campaign activities and the voting process. These rare sights are not everyday things that typical tourist seasons offer. Hence, it makes the experience more unforgettable and can even become a highlight of the journey. So traveling during elections can still be a good experience.
