Dashain Festival In Nepal
When it comes to celebration, the Dashain festival in Nepal is the biggest of them. The festival is one of the most significant Hindu festivals in the country. It is a 15-day celebration, which makes Dashain the longest festival of Nepal.
Home to over 125 ethnic groups, Nepal is ethnically and religiously diverse. Although a Hindu festival, Dashain is celebrated throughout Nepal. Different ethnic communities have their own unique Dashain traditions. For example, the Brahmin and Chettri ethnic communities put red tika, jamara, and perform animal sacrifice, while the Gurung communities wear white tika and jamara but refrain from animal sacrifices.
Dashain in Nepal is what Christmas is to the Western world. It is the most important time of the year, which revolves around devotion, family bonding, and blessings. Dashain also has a deep religious, spiritual, and cultural importance to all Nepalese. Let us learn more about this festival of blessings together!
What is Dashain Festival?
Dashain or Vijaya Dashami is the biggest festival in Nepal. It is a Hindu festival that symbolizes the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon, Mahishasura. It is also linked with the Ramayana and celebrates the victory of Lord Ram over Ravana. Thus, Dashain symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
Now, Dashain is the festival of families and blessings. But it is more than just a sacred festival for Nepalese. During the festive period, people who live or work abroad or in different cities reunite with their loved ones. It brings together families, communities, and the whole country. All the family members together clean their homes, decorate, and prepare for the celebration. There is laughter, warmth, and joy in every household. This age-old tradition is an opportunity for different generations to connect. The young members receive tika, jamara, dakshina (money), and blessings from their elders in the family.
The 15 days of the festival begin with Ghatasthapana and end on the full moon day of Kojagrat Purnima. Each day of the festival has some meaning, rituals, and ceremonies. Those wondering if we put tika and jamara throughout the festival time, no, we don’t. The tenth day is the biggest of all. It is when you put the tika in the hands of your elders, which then continues for a few more days. Usually, the grand festival falls during the autumn season. So, the pleasant weather and crisp air make the celebration more joyous.
Best Treks to Do During Dashain Festival
Trekking during Dashain is a unique and remarkable experience on its own. Here are some of the best treks that you can pair with the celebration of Dashain 2025:
1. Everest Base Camp Trek – 12 Days
What could be more exciting than joining an adventurous trek on the classic trail of the Everest region to celebrate the festival of Dashain? Follow the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa to the foothill of the world’s highest mountain, Everest (8,848.86 m), with the Everest Base Camp Trek (EBC). Dashain offers clear skies to witness the crystal-clear views of the iconic peaks like Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and more. Although locals here are mostly Buddhist, you can still see the festive atmosphere of Dashain. You will get to witness and be part of the local celebration as you navigate your way through the thrilling and diverse terrain.

Was referred to Harka by a friend who had done the 12 Days EBC Trek a few months before, and he was very easy to contact and quick to respond. We were a bit uneasy about booking with someone from the other side of the world, but Harka proved himself to be honest, professional, and reputable while organising our trip for us. Once we were in Kathmandu, he was easy to meet up with and was quick to help us out with anything we needed. Our guide, Mr. Dil, who met us in Lukla, was what really made our trip as amazing as it was. He was extremely knowledgable on the mountains and mountain passes, as well as getting us into tea houses and our flight home. He was very professional, friendly, and easy to work with, even though his English was a bit broken. Overall, it was an incredible trip, and I wouldn’t hesitate to book with Harka again. If you do the EBC, ask for Dil, he’s the man.

I booked a private trek to Everest Base Camp so it was just myself and my guide / porter trekking together for 12 days. As a solo traveller I always invest a lot of time in to researching the company I book with, it was important to me to do this with a Nepalese tour company and the previous reviews were so encouraging and positive I decided to contact Himalaya Trip to see what they had to offer.
Harka responded almost immediately despite the time difference and sent me detailed information on the Everest Base Camp trek. He answered all my questions and always replied quickly which continued to give me confidence. They were also very competitively priced compared to other local companies and along with the great reviews I had a good feeling that Harka and his team would be the ones to get me to EBC.
Harka met me at the airport, took me to my hotel and helped get me any last minute bits I needed for the trek in Kathmandu. He made everything very easy and I felt safe and reassured the whole time which is important to me as a solo female traveller.
My guide / porter was called Dil and he was the man I was spending 12 days with trekking to EBC. Dil was fantastic, he looked out for me every step of the way, regularly checking in to ensure I was ok and did everything to make my experience on the trek as comfortable and as safe as possible. Dil was so knowledgable about the area and the mountains he would point out everything along the way. Despite him speaking broken English we could quite easily chat and communicate without any problems.
The trek was an incredible experience and one of the toughest yet most amazing things I’ve ever done and part of that was down to the efficiency and professionalism of Harka and his team. I didn’t have to worry or think about a thing, just getting to EBC.

2. Annapurna Base Camp Trek – 7 Days
The next best trek that you can pair with Dashain’s festive celebration is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek (ABC). It is another classic trail that takes you deep into the Annapurna region and at the foothills of the world’s tenth-highest mountain, Mount Annapurna I (8,091 m). The trekking route is also easily accessible during the festive period. The Gurung and Magar villages along the trail come alive with the magic of Dashain. You can see golden crops ready for harvest and blooming marigolds adorning the fields and gardens. In addition to the rich cultural immersion, you will be greeted with the gorgeous Annapurna ranges and other surrounding peaks.

3. Langtang Valley Trek – 7 Days
If you want a quieter trek adventure while immersing in the rich cultural experience of Dashain, the Langtang Valley Trek is a perfect option. It is a short but easily accessible trek destination from Kathmandu. The Langtang region is home to the Tamang people, with a unique culture and traditions. You can celebrate the festive atmosphere with the locals while enjoying the warm hospitality. Similarly, you can bathe in the crisp weather of autumn while enjoying the alpine scenery and mountain views. You can experience the wonderful blend of Hindu and Buddhist culture while trekking on the quiet trails of Langtang Valley.
4. Mardi Himal Trek – 4 Days
Another option for a quieter and less commercialized trek destination is the Mardi Himal Trek. It’s an off-beat and quiet trail that takes you to the remote part of the Annapurna region. The peaceful and adventurous trail, paired with golden forests and clear skies, makes for an excellent trekking experience.

The villages along the route come alive with blooming flowers, colorful kites, and swings. You can join in the celebration together with the locals and feast with them. The fresh mountain air and the jaw-dropping views of Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and other peaks top off this incredible journey.

Amazing trip, with amazing views, and amazing Nepali people! Long hours of daily trekking, in the vicinity of simple small hotels, far away from civilization but the relaxing ambiance and fresh foods sum up our amazing experience. Nice warm weather during the days, chilly weather (almost 4 degrees) during nights, and
an unexpected blizzard on High Camp forced us to descend. An unforgettable experience descending 1700m down with snowing and raining, and getting wet. A fresh getaway and a "cut-off" from the daily rush for a workaholic like me was refreshing. Mardi Himal Trek is for those who wish to be close to nature, need a break from a hectic life, feel freedom, and are open to any new experience in the lap of the Himalayas. 🙂 Ps – Big thanks to Jay, he was always close, always helpful and we felt always safe. I would very highly recommend Himalaya Trip to anyone looking for a personalised, value-for-money tour guide for your trip to the Annapurna range in Nepal.
We communicated directly with Harka on email/Whatsapp, who helpfully recommended Mardi Himal based on a brief description of what we were looking for (of course you need to do your own research too, and provide information – length of stay, prior hiking experience, specific views – that is useful for Harka to recommend something tailored to you). We wouldn’t have known about this trek otherwise, as it’s less well known than Poon Hill, and it was exactly what we hoped to do in Nepal.
We didn’t feel like we’re just one of many, many tourists passing through. Hari and Shurpa, our guide and porter, made us feel like friends. It was fun to chat and equally, they left us to our own devices so we had enough privacy and independence on the trek. We also had a lot of flexibility to rest and decide how far we could walk in a day.
About the Mardi Himal trek is walking in the rainforest first, then the route opens to a mountain trail (crazy amazing views). Fairly manageable for novice trekkers who are moderately fit as you will feel like you are climbing upwards; although not ridiculously steep, you will definitely pant and ache. There’s limited boardwalk or stone steps. The final climb up to the Mardi Himal view point from High Camp can be challenging, as you will climb boulders and rocks. Worth the climb, lots of older folks and kids, so definitely doable and the views are 100% rewarding.

I could not recommend Harka and his team more. I was a solo female traveler and I felt incredibly safe and well taken care of the entire time leading up to the trek and even after I left Nepal. I couldn’t decide on a trek and with Harka’s help, I settled on Mardi Himal. While it rained the entire time and we didn’t have any of the amazing mountain views, my guide Jay, was the absolute best and we had a great time. He took care of everything and made sure I never wanted for anything. I saw other guides along the way and trust me, Himalaya Trip go above and beyond. They are really a special crew of guys. I always felt safe and had so much fun the entire time.
I think my one suggestion would be that this itinerary could be shortened, especially if you are in good shape. A few of the days are really quite short and we still ended up with extra days in Kathmandu and Pokhara — not a complaint but merely a minor suggestion.
My experience overall was absolutely perfect and wonderful and something I will always always remember. Book with Himalaya Trip and don’t look back!!!

Tracing The History of Dashain, Myth & Tradition
There are several myths revolving around the Dashain celebration, along with an age-old history. Let us explore them in-depth:
Religious History
There are two Hindu mythologies that are connected with Dashain. The most famous one is the story of Goddess Durga and Mahisasura. The other is the Hindu epic Ramayana, associated with Lord Ram and Ravana. Let us explore both myths:
Goddess Durga and Mahisasura
This version of mythology comes from an ancient Vedic scripture, the Devi Mahatmya. It is a sacred text composed over 1,500 years ago and found within the Markandeya Purana. The script tells a story of the battle of Goddess Durga against the demon Mahisasura. It is believed that the story was first told 1.3 billion years ago. The mythology forms a spiritual foundation of Dashain, but the exact date is unknown.
According to the Devi Mahatmya, there was once a powerful asura (demon), Mahisasura. He received a boon from Brahma, the god of creation, that he could only be defeated by a female deity. With this boon, he grew arrogant and waged a war on heaven and earth. To put an end to his evil deeds, the Trimurti gods, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, created Goddess Durga. She is the embodiment of the divine female power, Shakti. Similarly, she is armed with weapons like a sword, an arrow, a bow, a shield, and more.
Goddess Durga entered the battle with Mahishasura for nine days and nights. Hence, the first nine days of Dashain represent the nine different divine forms of Durga. Her nine forms are also known as “Navadurga.” Then on the tenth day, the goddess defeated the demon, restoring cosmic balance. This day is the tenth and most important day of the Dashain festival in Nepal, the Vijaya Dashami. Devotees worship the goddess’s nine forms and seek her blessings for protection, strength, and prosperity.
Lord Ram and Ravana
Ramayan is one of the two greatest epics of Hindu literature. Written by the sage Valmiki, the epic tells the life story of Lord Ram, an incarnation of God Vishnu. According to the epic, the king of Lanka, Ravana, who was also a demon king, abducted Lord Ram’s wife, Sita. As a result, the lord went to war with Ravana. It is believed that Ram worshipped Goddess Durga before the battle to seek her blessings. The goddess was pleased with his prayers and blessed him. Then, on the tenth day, he defeated the demon king, which is celebrated as Vijaya Dashami. It is another myth that symbolizes good defeating evil.
Although Dashain is not celebrated in India, it is an important festival. The celebration is different in Nepal and India. Both festivals fall on the tenth day after the nine nights of Navaratri. While the tenth day of Dahsain in Nepal is known as Vijaya Dashami, it is known as Dussehra in India. The North Indians burn effigies of King Ravana, his son Meghnath, and his brother Kumbhakaran. Meanwhile, the Eastern states in India celebrate the event with Durga Puja. They also immerse large idols of Goddess Durga in river. There are fireworks and religious processions in different parts of India.
Agrarian History
In addition to the myth, there is a deep agrarian history that connects Dashain with the Nepalese lifestyle. The majority of the locals, especially in rural areas, depend on agriculture for their livelihood. In old times, the festival was celebrated right after the locals had harvested their rice crops. The festival timing was also perfect as the monsoon season ends at the exact time. It marks the beginning of the autumn season.
Dashain was not only a religious celebration but also a celebration of a successful harvest. The farmers would get to rest after months of hard work. With a rich harvest, fresh grains, and a clean home, the Nepalese would worship the Goddess Durga and celebrate this festival. They would thank her for the bountiful harvest and for protecting their families. Similarly, they would offer some of their harvest to the goddess. The planting of Jamara on Ghatasthapana reflects the agrarian connection. Hence, the Dashain festival Nepal also represents fertility, prosperity, and a good crop harvest.
How is Dashain Celebrated in Nepal?
Dashain is widely celebrated with much joy, enthusiasm, devotion, and family gatherings. Over the span of 15 days, families perform various rituals, worship the nine forms of Durga, and feast together. They also visit temples and make animal sacrifices. As the festival draws closer, every Nepalese household begins to get festive. Traditional meals like sel roti, meat curry, and sweets are prepared for feasting. People thoroughly clean their houses and decorate them. They also do Dashain shopping and visit fairs. Shops often offer Dashain discounts, and there are festive fairs in many places.

You can see colorful kites soaring over the blue Nepalese skies. Families and friends gather together and fly kites. Additionally, there are kite-flying competitions. People participate in the contest, showcasing their skills and trying to cut each other’s kites. You can hear the people shouting “chait” when someone cuts another’s kite. The activity serves not only for fun purposes but also has religious significance. It is believed that the flying kites signal the rain god the end of the monsoon. It is a way of reminding the gods not to send any more rain.
Another way people celebrate Dashain festival is by playing swings and cards. Family and friends gather together to play various card games. More than gambling, playing cards is a way of bonding and merrymaking. The game is associated with fortune, prosperity, and testing each other’s luck. The locals also play traditional swing or ping. These swings are made with bamboo poles, wooden planks, and sturdy ropes. Usually, they are set up in open fields or grounds, where anyone can play them. These activities are simple but part of age-old traditions that connect all Nepalese people.
When is Dashain Celebrated?
The Dashain 15 days celebration follows the Nepali Bikram Sambat, which aligns with the lunar calendar. It usually falls from late September to mid-October according to the Gregorian calendar. There is an official calendar determining committee, the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti, which announces the festival dates and auspicious times for each day’s rituals. These dates are published in newspapers, on TV, on the radio, and other online platforms.
Important Days of Dashain Festival
Although all 15 days of Dashain are important, some are more important than others. So, it is best that you know about the most significant days, so you can perfectly time the festival of blessings. Here are the significant days of the biggest Hindu festival in Nepal:
Ghatasthapana: The beginning of Dashain
The first day of Dashain is Ghatasthapana, which marks the beginning of the festive celebration. The name consists of two words from Sanskrit, in which “Ghata” means pot or vessel, and “sthapana” means to place or establish. Combining it means placing Jamara in the pot.
Thus, on this day, almost every household sows Jamara (barley, maize, and paddy seeds ) in a pot or kalash. These seeds are planted in clean sand, watered, and worshipped daily. The planting of seeds is believed to invite Goddess Durga into one’s home. The golden shoots from the seeds are worn as Jamar on Bijaya Dashami.
Phulpati: The seventh day of sacred offerings
The next important day of the festival of blessing is the seventh day, Phulpati. The term “Phulpati” translates into “sacred flowers and leaves.” On this day, families worship Goddess Durga with nine different flowers. Along with it, they also offer sacred items like banana stalks, sugarcane, and jamara, seeking blessings from the goddess.
There used to be a tradition of bringing these sacred items from Gorkha in a royal procession on foot to Kathmandu’s Hanuman Dhoka Palace. It is still done, but no longer on foot. Army officials also fired weapons to mark Phulpati. Similarly, the Nepal Army performs a ceremonial parade before the president and other government officials in Tudikhel. Then, the sacred items brought to Hanuman Dhoka are transferred to Kathmandu Durbar Square.
Maha Ashtami: The eighth day of devotion
