Like many high-altitude expeditions in Nepal, this trek promises breathtaking mountain vistas, encounters with ethnic villages, traverses through forests, and thrilling trails, among other delights. However, what sets the Annapurna Tilicho Lake trek apart are its unique features and novel experiences.

Venturing on the Annapurna circuit with a detour to Tilicho Lake allows trekkers to behold the world’s highest lake, Tilicho Lake, the majestic Annapurna massif, the sacred site of Muktinath revered by Hindus and Buddhists, and the exploration of the picturesque Manang Valley. Additionally, trekkers will have the opportunity to encounter Himalayan flora and fauna, traverse stunning landscapes, witness cascading waterfalls, experience diverse climate zones, cross the challenging Thorung La Pass, immerse themselves in Tibetan settlements, and even bathe in hot springs, all while enjoying countless panoramic mountain views.

There are 4 major highlights of this trek: Muktinath temple, Thorang La Pass, Manang Village and Tilicho Lake.

Muktinath Temple:

Located at an elevation of 3,710 meters (12,172 feet) at the foot of the Thorong La mountain pass in Nepal’s Mustang district, Muktinath Temple holds profound significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. Revered by Hindus as Mukti Kshetra, translating to the “place of salvation,” it stands as one of the oldest temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu in Nepal, embodying the Vaishnava tradition. Among the revered sites, it is counted among the Svayam Vyakta Ksetras, alongside Srirangam, Srimushnam, Tirupati, Naimisharanya, Totadri, Pushkar, and Badrinath. Additionally, it’s recognized as one of the 108 Divya Desam, holy abodes of Lord Vishnu, and one of the 51 Shakti Pitha goddess sites.

Despite its modest size, Muktinath Temple houses a golden statue of Vishnu as Shri Mukti Narayana, alongside bronze depictions of Bhoodevi, Saraswati, Janaki (Sita), Garuda, Lava-Kusa, and the Sapta Rishis. Buddhist nuns conduct worship in the presence of an aged Buddhist monk, reflecting the temple’s unique fusion of Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Thorong La Pass:

Standing proudly at an impressive elevation of 5,416 meters (17,769 feet), Thorong La Pass is more than just a passage through mountains; it’s a portal to awe-inspiring landscapes, rugged trails, and cultural immersion. It marks a significant point along the celebrated Annapurna Circuit, a trekking route renowned for its breathtaking panoramas and cultural interactions. Serving as a vital link between the Manang and Mustang districts of Nepal, Thorong La Pass offers trekkers an entryway to explore the marvels of the Himalayas.

Manang Village:

Perched at an elevation of 3,540 meters, Manang is a picturesque village nestled on the precipitous cliffs of the northern region of the Annapurna Range. Its arid landscapes evoke the ambiance of a desert, yet the culture and lifestyle of the local Manangi people brim with vibrancy and vitality. Renowned for its short trekking options in Nepal, Manang Valley emerges as a veritable paradise for trekkers and tourists alike. The Manang trek unveils a tapestry of natural splendor, rich cultural experiences, and breathtaking vistas of the Annapurna ranges.

Often hailed as the “crown jewel” of the esteemed Annapurna Circuit Trek, Manang offers unparalleled views of majestic snow-capped peaks such as Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Glacier Dome , Pisang Peak etc.

Tilicho Lake:

Tilicho Lake, nestled within Nepal’s Annapurna range in the Himalayas, stands as one of the world’s highest lakes. Revered as a sacred body of water by locals and coveted as a dream travel destination by adventurers and trekkers worldwide, it sits majestically at an elevation of 4,919 meters (16,138 feet), imbuing it with a sense of seclusion and allure.

Nestled between the Manaslu and Annapurna ranges, the Marsyangdhi river basin provides access to the Manang district. The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake follows a circular route, commencing from Dharapani and concluding in Pokhara, forming a semi-circle circuit trek.

Embarking on the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake begins from Dharapani and Chame, a quaint town in the Manang region, the journey progresses northward along the riverbank pathway, passing through villages such as Pisang, Manang, Shri Kharka and Tilicho Base Camp before reaching the sublime Tilicho Lake at 4919 meters. Tilicho Lake is often referred to as the highest lake in the world, particularly in Nepal. However, defining what constitutes a lake versus a pond presents a challenge, as there is considerable uncertainty and no universally accepted definition for either term. While there are bodies of water at higher elevations than Tilicho (which sits at an altitude of 4920 meters), they are typically much smaller in size, often no more than a few hundred meters. Therefore, it could be said that Tilicho Lake is the highest lake in the world for its size, as the higher expanses of water are significantly smaller in comparison. After visiting this pristine lake, you will retrace the trail back to Shri Kharka to spend the night.

Additionally, if fortunate, trekkers may catch a glimpse of the Himalayan Blue Sheep during this section of the journey. The surrounding scenery offers breathtaking alpine views, rugged terrain, and panoramic vistas of neighboring peaks. After trekking for approximately 6 – 7 hours with mostly uphill terrain, we arrive at Churi Lattar. From here, views of Thorung La Phedi and Thorung Peak are visible. We will spend the night at Churi Lattar.

As you continue your ascent from Chauri Lader, you’ll surpass the 4000-meter elevation mark. It’s crucial to proceed with caution, maintaining a slow and steady pace. The terrain beyond Churi Lattar is characterized by barren, dry, and semi-arid conditions, presenting significant risks such as landslides and altitude sickness. It’s essential to heed the advice of your guide and take necessary precautions. Today’s journey leads you through numerous dry landslides scattered across the landscape. The Manang region experiences minimal rainfall, even during the monsoon season, resulting in predominantly dry conditions. Occasionally, strong storm winds further heighten the risk of landslides in various parts of the area. Following the trail alongside the Kona River, we’ll reach Thorung Phedi and high camp in the evening, where we’ll spend the night. From Thorung High Camp, you’ll be treated to mesmerizing vistas of Purbung Himal (6500m), Mt. JinJang (6111m), Mt. Chulu West (6584m), and other stunning mountain peaks.

Incredible!

Hi! Im Sara, from Spain!
Good morning!
Yesterday we arrived from our 11-day trekking in Gokyo.
There were 3 people from Spain, and I don’t know how to express how happy I felt.
From the beginning, Himalaya Trip has been attentive to us, with a welcome at the hotel and explanation of the route, rental of necessary equipment, etc.
The most important thing for us has been the ease and comfort with which Ramesh (our precious guide) has taken care of us at all time.
Attentive to the food, to make sure we didn’t get cold, adapting the route day by day according to the needs of the team.

I only have words of gratitude for Ramesh, who I would recommend for any trekking in the world.
In addition to being a great guide and knowing all the mountains of Nepal perfectly, he is a great person, with a big heart.

We hope to repeat in the not too distant future and hopefully it can be with him, since he is already part of our family.
Thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart.

Thanks!!!!

Couldn’t recommend enough

Had an incredible experience doing the Mardi Himal trek with Himalaya Trip. Our guide Jay and our two porters Umesh and Masak were all simply incredible people.

I’m a photographer so always have odd requests for weird areas to access for better angles or even simply just extending time in certain areas and all requests were met with so much help from the team. Highly recommend

Mardi Himal: fantastic trek & wonderful guide

I had an amazing time trekking with Surpa, particularly as this was my first solo trek. Beautiful views doing the Mardi Himal trek over 4 days, Surpa was a great guide who organised everything so well for me, kept me well fed, supported a good pace the whole way and always cheerful. Would recommend, and I would happily have him as my guide again in the future. The organisation and booking with Himalaya Trip was great, really responsive on emails and Harka was so helpful in organising everything and meeting me in Kathmandu for a briefing before the trip. Thanks so much!

Once in a lifetime experience in the Himalayas

Our 4 day Mardi Himal Trek with guide Milan and porter Plekta was a wonderful experience. The manager Harka Gurung met with us over coffee in Kathmandu and briefed us about expectations as this was our first trek. After that our guide met us at our hotel in Pokhara, helped us rent equipment, and handled all logistics in between. Our first time in the Himalayas was unforgettable between all the unbelievable landscapes and scenery, and we were lucky to have MIlan and Plekta with us to experience it all. I can’t begin to describe how ethereal sunrise is over the base camp, but hopefully you’ll be able to experience it soon!
