Everest Three Passes Trek Details

The Everest Three Passes Trek is one of the most adventurous treks in Nepal. The eastern Himalayan belt in Nepal, enveloped by the grandeur of the Everest mountains, hosts a plethora of more than 300 diverse peaks varying in elevation. The landscape is adorned with Precambrian high-grade metamorphic rocks, reaching up to 8848.86 meters above sea level. Following these rocky formations, one encounters semi-arid hills, through which the Dudh Koshi River gracefully winds through narrow gorges. The trail navigates through the highest passes, namely Renjo La Pass (5345 meters), Cho-La Pass (5420 meters), and Kongma-La Pass (5535 meters), constituting a circuit journey famously known as the Three Passes Trek in Nepal, encircling the lofty Everest highland.

Unlike the enduring Everest Base Camp trek, the High Pass trek is a tough, adventurous experience that traverses three passes over 5,000 meters. Be wary; this trek is not for the faint of heart. The elevation of the Everest Three Passes Trek reaches the soaring height of 5535 meters at Kongma La Pass and 5555 meters at Kala Patthar Peak. The sheer elevation mark beyond the 5,000-meter mark makes it a challenging yet rewarding trek in the Everest region.

The journey to these passes whisks together natural amusements, geographical wonders, towering peaks, biodiversity, cultural distinctions, and a holistic experience. The Everest region's lower section stretching region to Namche Bazaar is filled with tropical foliage. As you ascend further, with the change in geology, you will encounter a dry and barren landscape resembling semi-arid topography amidst high Himalayan mountains. Over 300 Himalayan peaks stand in series along the Everest region. Mt. Everest (8848m), Mt. Lhotse(8516m), Mt.Lhotse Sar(8383m), Mt. Ama Dablam (6812m), Mt. Nuptse(7861m), Mt. Khumbutse(6,665m) among others are popular mountains residing in Everest vista.

Points of Attractions in Everest Three Passes Trek

Encapsulated under Sagarmatha National Park, the Everest region and its vicinity is alluring to natural enthusiasts. This trek will reward you handsomely if you find solitude in a natural setting and ambiance. Herein highlighted are some of the major attractions of this trek that you will encounter:

Buddhist Monuments

The Sherpa group of people who reside in the Everest region follow Buddhist cults in their religious practices. You will encounter several Buddhist heritages that date back centuries before on your traverse of Everest 3 Passes. Chhortens, Stupas, Mani Walls, Inscriptions, Festivals, and Monasteries are all tangible factors of Buddhist monuments. You will observe Tengboche Monastery, Thame Monastery, Khunde Monastery, Pangboche Monastery, and Namche Monastery during this trek. These centuries-old monasteries are evidence of Solukhumbu being a sacred Buddhist district.

High Passes

Kongma La Pass

The first pass you will encounter based on Everest Three Passes Itinerary is the Kongma La Pass. Standing tall at 5535 meters above sea level, this pass sits between Chukkung and Lobuche in the far eastern reach of the Everest region. Khumbu Glacier cuts off the western base of this pass right before you reach Lobuche. It is considered one of the most challenging passes located in Nepal.

Cho La Pass

In between the route of Everest base camp and Gokyo Valley sits another pass by the name of Cho La Pass. (5420m). This is one of the three passes in the Everest Region, which you will traverse second (the first being Kongma La Pass). Cho La Pass is technically daunting and strenuous. As you hike up from Dzongla, you will encounter a steeply inclined section that takes you to the top of the pass. The western base of Cho La Pass is settled by Ngo Zumba Glacier and Gokyo Lakes. The view that you will gaze at from the top of this pass is astounding.

Renjo La Pass

The third and final pass of the Everest Three Passes Trekking is Renjo La Pass. After reaching the Gokyo valley, you will encounter this pass and move towards Lungdhen village for your return journey. It is the westernmost pass of this trekking and reaches 5360 meters above sea level. The climb to this pass from the Gokyo side is steep and inclined relative to the descent towards Lungdhen.

Waterbodies

Dudh Koshi River

Dudh Koshi River is the major river system that cuts through the Solukhumbu district to reach the Saptakoshi River system on the south. It is also famous for being the world's highest elevated river from the Everest range glacier. For most of the Everest region, you will encounter this river multiple times while trekking.

Imja River

Imja River is a tributary of the Dudh Koshi River. It originates from Imjatse or Island Peak, which sits in the eastern reach of Solukhumbu district. You will first encounter this river between Tengboche and Dingboche, where a suspension bridge is hung above. This river collects its water from the Imja Glacier in the Dingboche Valley.

Gokyo Lakes

Located at elevations ranging from 4000 to 5000 meters in Sagarmatha National Park, the Gokyo Lakes are oligotrophic water bodies. This assemblage consists of six main lakes, with Lake Thonak being the largest and Gokyo Cho (Dudh Pokhari) being the primary. While the initial five lakes commonly attract trekkers, the sixth is often neglected due to its elevated position and mysterious, abyssal nature.

Significantly, the Gokyo Lakes system extends beyond these six, including an additional 19 lakes and wetlands. This entirety was recognized as a Ramsar site in 2007. The Gokyo Lakes trek is popular in the Khumbu region, promising an extraordinary journey.

The Everest Three Passes trek can be done clockwise and anticlockwise, with the trail separating from Namche Bazaar.

Note: Due to the air traffic in Kathmandu Airport, all the flights will be operating from Ramechhap to Lukla and Lukla to Ramechhap during the peak season from March, April, May, October, and November. At other times of the year, you will fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and Lukla to Kathmandu.

Amazing 3 Passes Trek Experience

We recently completed the 3 passes trek with Jay (guide) and Bikas (porter) and it was an amazing, unforgettable experience. The whole experience of organizing it with the Himalayas Trip team was very straight forward and they were very accommodating. Jay picked us both up separately from the airport and the whole trip he couldn't do more for us. With the help of Bikas, over 17 days, we climbed through the 3 passes, bowled over by the beauty of the Himalayas as we slowly became mountain men and accustomed to our new life of lodges, altitude and rice and noodles. It is a stunning area and escape and when the clouds were gone, the landscape is so wonderful, you don't want to leave. Jay & Bikas took great care of us the whole trip, we felt like family by the end of it and I would strongly recommend anyone considering this trip to undertake it with Jay and the Himalaya Trip team. It was a wonderful, unforgettable experience and we haven't stopped planning our next trip back to the mountains. We will be seeing the mountains and the Himalaya Trip team soon!

I would like highly recommend Harka

I would like highly recommend Harka, as a great organiser of our trek. He managed fit to all our requirements (tiing, places we would like to see and hike during the trekking). Moreover, he took care of us even once our private staying in Kathmandu (transfers, checking if we are fine, helping to find a driver for additional sightseeing we wanted to have).

Last, but not least: we are sooo greatful to our great guide (Ramesh) during our trek and Depak (our porter). With this team, the trek was real pleasure and magnificent experiance. Ramesh was always taking care of our health and condition, trying to find best rooms in teahouses and best spots during aclimatization time. Once - due to health conditions - we were not able to finish the trek as planned - he was fully supportive to change the plan and adapt it to our capabilities.

Ramesh and Depak were the best team we could have during our trek (Everest base camp and Island Peak base camp with Depak was a great experience with a lot of fun!).

Brilliant, fantastic and breathtaking - go the team Jay, Bikas and Meshak treated us like kings. My 4th trek with them and they are still the best in Nepal. 21 days of trekking and everyday something else to tick of the bucket list we started in the rhododendron forests and ended at the 5550 myr passes climbing up close to a rock face, walked on snow covered glaciers and around pristine high altitude lakes. Always being looked after by the team from hidden treks - will be back fir another trek in 4 years I can’t wait and can’t reckomrnd these guys hug enough 👍👍👍👍

mad dogs and english men – Jiri – base camp – 3 passes

what can I say...

3 treks in one for a group of mates from across the world

Harka organized the trek we asked for, but he didn't tell us we were actually doing 3 treks in one

we did the Jirri to base camp trek adding 5 days to avoid flying into Lukla airport then the 3 "killer" passes as well

Jay was a legend and fantastic guide who we had when we did the Manaslu circuit so no problems there, Bickas was a great porter and again the language barrier was not an issue and we all got on fantastically

I can't fault Harka and his team as they look after you from the moment you arrive at the airport to dropping you off for your flights home

this is the 3rd time we have been trekking in Nepal, all treks with Harka and we will be back in a couple of years for more adventures

Harka has built a great family business and all the other trekkers we met that were using him had all done multiple treks with him, so that is how you determine a good business the return trade and yes we will be returning again

Go Harka and his team from Himalaya Trip.

Amazing company and people

In April we booked the Three High Passes trek to EBC with Himalaya Trip after glowing recommendations from one of our friends, and had one of the best trips of our lives thanks to our guide Jayandra, and The rest of Harka's team!

At all times we had complete confidence in them and have become great friends. They helped us buy gear upon arriving in Kathmandu, handled all the flights to Lukla and made sure at all times we were ok with altitude and energy etc.. Our guide Jay was awesome, and even when heavy snow met us on our descent from Gorak Shep, Jay and another guide Om from the same company were there helping us and all others on the mountain down the slippery tracks - great guys.

We were so happy with their tours we immediately booked another 5 day trek in the Annapurna region to Poon Hill a day after our EBC trek. There we had great food, saw the sunrise at Poon Hill and sat in natural hot springs next to a river in the rainforest with thunder and lightning overhead. An amazing experience and the best Dal Bhat!

Even after the earthquakes, the selflessness of the Nepalese and Himalaya Trip continued to amaze us. If you are interested in visiting Nepal and doing any treks, PLEASE contact Himalaya Trip and support these great people. Nepal is a beautiful country and these guys will help you have the best time!

Personalized Everest

A group of 4 of us traveled with Harka on a 15-day trek in the Everest region. Harka was very accommodating in letting us customize our trip based on the group's preferences. We went over 3 high passes, up 2 small mountains, to clear mountain lakes, and Everest base camp. We had a great adventure that I would highly recommend.

Three Passes Trek Info

What Makes the Everest Three Passes Special

Majestic Views

The Everest Three Pass is one of the high-altitude treks, so naturally, one of the reasons for trekking this region is the chance to see majestic views of the valleys and mountains. The trekkers will see views of some of the highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, etc. The trekkers will reach three high passes well above 5000m, from where the entire view of the Khumbu region, mountains, and valleys are majestic.

Off Beaten Path

The Everest Three Pass trek is one of Nepal's off-the-beaten-path routes. It is highly popular among trekkers who prefer a less crowded, peaceful route. Engaging in this trek allows trekkers to experience the majestic Everest Three Pass trek: complete quiet, peace, and freedom. Compared to the more commercialized Everest Base Camp Trek, the trekkers looking for a more challenging adventure can choose this trek.

Sense of Achievement

The Everest Three Pass trek is one of Nepal's toughest and most challenging treks that needs extensive preparation and training. The Three Passes trek is more challenging than the classic Everest Base Camp Trek due to its longer distance and the need to cross three high passes: Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La, all over 5,000 m (16,500 ft). With two rest days for acclimatization, expect to hike 5-8 hours daily at high altitudes, requiring good fitness, determination, and endurance. This trek is a true challenge even for experienced hikers, but it showcases the best of the Khumbu region. At the end of the trek, the feeling of achievement makes the trek much more rewarding as well.

Ngozumpa Glacier

Among many other trek reasons, the Everest Three Pass trek and Ngozumpa Glacier are also important. This is one of the rare landmarks of Nepal, which only a few trekkers visiting the Gokyo Valley will get the chance to see and experience. During the Everest Base Camp Trek, the trekkers will see the Khumbu glacier, but to see the Ngozumpa glacier, they will have to pass through complex glacial moraines.

Lukla to Everest High Passes Trek

Everest Three Passes Trek route begins from Lukla and ascends to Namche Bazaar, a vibrant Sherpa settlement that unveils a world of its own. The trail then ascends through a semi-arid landscape, promising a thrilling journey on the Everest high passes trek. The initial challenge unfolds at Kongma-La Pass, standing tall at 5535 meters, with the ascent commencing from Chukkung. Prepare for a rigorous 5-hour climb, best initiated in the early morning. The adventure continues with a visit to Everest Base Camp, followed by a return to Gorakshep.

Next on the agenda is the ascent to the majestic Kalapathhar peak, reaching an impressive 5,555 meters, before progressing towards Dzongla. Chola Pass (5420m) emerges as a significant milestone on the trail between Dzongla and Thagnak. Continuing the journey, we trek to the pristine Gokyo Lake and conquer yet another pass, Renjo La Pass (5345m). The Everest Three Passes trek culminates with this traverse, leading the way back to Lukla. This thrilling adventure promises not only breathtaking landscapes but also a test of endurance, making it a memorable odyssey through the heart of the Everest region.

How Tough is the Everest Three Passes Trek

Everest Three Pass Trek’s difficulty ranges from moderate to challenging. For trekkers with vast experience, and know-how, the trek might not be as difficult; however, for those with no experience, this trek can be difficult. Certain factors influence the trek's difficulty. Here are some of the factors that make the Everest three-pass trek difficult.

High Altitude

One of the primary reasons the Everest Three Pass trek is tough is due to the high altitude trek. In this trek, the trekkers will visit the high altitude of Kongma La Pass (5,535m), which invites difficulties at the altitude, such as dynamic weather, altitude sickness, etc. The chance of altitude sickness increases from the altitude of 3000m. So when the trekkers reach above 3000m and eventually reach 5000m, the chance of altitude sickness increases, which can halt the progress of the trek in its track.

Physical and Mental fatigue

The Everest three pass trek takes about 17 to 21 days, meaning the trekkers have to walk for three weeks, with a few days of break. Walking for three weeks can be very tiring, requiring about 6 hours daily during the challenging three-pass trek in the Everest region. There's no option to quit mid-way due to a lack of facilities. Training with smaller hikes to build endurance before tackling this trek is essential to prepare mentally and physically. Being mentally strong is very important for this trek. You will be walking in a place with no facilities. Good food and warm clothes are rare here. You need to prepare yourself to adapt to a rural lifestyle. Be ready for the worst but don't wear yourself out mentally. If you are not mentally prepared, the difficulty of the three-pass Everest region trek will feel even greater.

Remoteness

The Everest Three Pass trek takes place in the remote area of the Khumbu region, where there is less infrastructure and fewer services. Limited places for food, accommodation, medical care, entertainment, transportation, etc. make the trek harder than other commercialized treks in Nepal. So trekkers have to prepare and train for the remoteness of the trek and increase their physical fitness.

Dynamic Weather

The weather in the Everest region is very unpredictable. Because of this, you should prepare for anything at any time. The temperatures are freezing, and the harsh weather will make the Everest three pass trek more difficult. There is no heating system available. You must wear thick layers to keep warm during the night. Your trip may not go as planned because of the challenging weather.

Daily Routine on the Everest Three Passes Trek

The Everest Three Passes Trek is a challenging but rewarding adventure through the Himalayas. A typical day on this trek can be broken down into the following:

Morning:

5 to 6 AM: Early Start: Wake up early, usually around 6:00 AM, to enjoy the sunrise over the mountains.

6 Am to 7 AM: Breakfast: Fuel up with a hearty breakfast at your teahouse or lodge.

7 AM to 12 PM: Trekking: Begin your daily trek, typically covering 4-6 hours of walking.

Afternoon:

12 PM to 1 PM Lunch Break: Stop for lunch at a teahouse or picnic spot along the trail.

2 PM to 4 PM: Continue Trekking: After lunch, continue your trek, enjoying the stunning scenery and acclimatizing to the altitude.

4 PM to 5 PM: Reach Your Destination: Arrive at your destination for the night, usually a teahouse or lodge.

Evening:

5 PM to 8 PM: Dinner: Enjoy a delicious dinner at your accommodation, followed by some relaxation and socializing with other trekkers.

9 PM to 10 PM: Rest and Recharge: Get a good night's sleep early from around 9 to 10 PM to prepare for the next day's trek.

Is any altitude training recommended for this trek?

Everest Three Pass Trek is one of the highest altitude treks, which is why high altitude sickness is one of the major concerns for trekkers. Due to this, reach altitude training is recommended, especially for beginners who have decent physical fitness but are unaware of the know-how on proper acclimatization.

Before the high altitude complex trek like these, trekkers can train in low altitudes to replicate the situation they are likely to encounter during these high altitudes. Here are some ways of altitude training for Everest Three Passes Trek.

  • Spend time at a high altitude and train your body at a lower altitude, which mimics the condition of the trekking where you will trek high and sleep low.
  • The interval training substitutes the burst of high-intensity and low-intensity trekking.
  • Focus on raising your cardio level to last in the rough terrains.
  • Increase your strength level by focusing on strength training exercises like lifting weights and spending time in the gym.

Experienced Guides and Porters for Everest Three Passes Trek

Trekking guides and porters are crucial in ensuring a successful trekking adventure. When you embark on the Everest High Passes Trek with Himalaya Trip, you can trust that your trekking guide is licensed and government-registered and has extensive experience in the Himalayas. We prioritize local guides who are intimately familiar with the area, providing you with invaluable insights about the surroundings and expertly navigating the trail.

Throughout your trek, dedicated porters will accompany you. Each porter must carry a maximum of 20-25 kilograms of baggage, serving two individuals at most. This ensures a more comfortable and enjoyable trekking experience for you. If you have specific language preferences for your guide, please inquire with us, and we will make the necessary arrangements to accommodate your needs.

Can I Trek Solo on Everest High Passes?

Yes, you can go on a solo trek to Everest High Pass; however, it is not recommended. As mentioned earlier, several challenges and difficulties will impact trekking. It will be tough on the high-altitude trek, with dynamic weather, freezing temperatures, and the chance of frequent snowstorms, blizzards, avalanches, etc. During these extreme trekking conditions, the trekkers must rely on the expertise of guides, and trekking alone can be very risky, so at least you need one more trekking companion with you.

Hiring guides and porters along the trek will help the trekkers navigate and keep them safe and secure throughout the trek. Guides are experienced with the trails of the Khumbu region, so even if the trek is long and has rugged trails, they know how to navigate from teahouse to teahouse. They are also well equipped with the know-how of altitude sickness, proper acclimatization, and knowledge of first aid, which will be helpful during the trek. Furthermore, guides are equally beneficial as they carry heavy loads even in the steep ascents and descents. Having carried and kept your bags secure will make you enjoy the trek even more.

Everest Three Passes Trek Permits and Costs

Trekkers must have two entry permits to be eligible for the Everest Three Passes. The two permits that the trekkers need to issue are the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit and the Sagarmatha National Park Permit. The Everest region is enclosed by Sagarmatha National Park, established in 1976. The local governing body of the Everest region after Lukla is Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality which demands a separate entry permit. So, look at some of the licenses you need for the Everest Three Passes trek.

Sagarmatha National Park Permit

What to Eat on the Everest High Passes Trek

The Meals are an ideal aspect of the trekking that needs to be taken seriously. Not having proper meals can harm the trekkers, as they can get ill, halting their trek. In terms of meals, the trekkers will have three meals every day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Your meals will be prepared at the teahouses throughout your Everest Passes trek. Lunch breaks will be taken in midpoint villages, while dinners and breakfasts will be served at the tea houses where you stay.

The teahouses offer various food options, primarily featuring essential Tibetan and Nepalese cuisine. Additionally, continental dishes are part of the menu as well. We highly recommend the traditional "Dal Bhat," a Nepalese set meal comprising rice, lentil soup, curries, and pickles. Regarding menus, the breakfast during the trek includes Oatmeals, Pancakes, Toast, Eggs, Momo, Pasta, etc. The menus for lunch and dinner are quite similar, such as Nepali Dal Bhat, pizzas, burgers, momos, steaks, and steaks.

Teahouses and Lodges Along the Trek

Just like meals, accommodation is an equally important aspect of the trekking. For trekkers, having the best place to rest in the form of accommodation is really important as it can relax and rejuvenate your body. The options for accommodation range from the hotels and lodges in the lower level of the trek to the cozy small teahouses amid the Himalayas.

Throughout your trek, you'll encounter numerous mountain lodges offering essential respites. Typically constructed with wooden structures, these houses feature rooms accommodating 2-6 people, and standard facilities include quilts, mattresses, and pillows. Teahouses in Everest trekking are equipped with power access for charging electronics. While WiFi availability varies, hot showers often incur an additional cost.
