Pokhara to Poon Hill Trek Itinerary
Day 1- Drive from Pokhara to Birethanti and Trek to Ulleri
The first day of the Poonhill trek begins early morning in Pokhara with a delicious breakfast. After breakfast, it’s time to travel from Pokhara to Birethanti by vehicle. The trek to Poon Hill only begins once you reach Birethanti after short drive from Nayapul. After reaching Tikhedhunga, you will take a quick break, have lunch, and begin your trek to Ulleri. After 5-6 hours of trekking from Birethanti, you will reach Ulleri to stay overnight.
Day 2: Trek from Ulleri to Ghorepani
The next day, the trek starts from Ulleri and goes to Ghorepani. The distance is about 8 km, and reaching there takes about 5 to 6 hours. You will begin to pass through different villages like Banthati, where you will get the first glimpse of the massive Annapurna Massiff. The majestic views of the mountains, like Hiunchuli, Annapurna I and South, Fishtail, and other mountains are visible. You will pass through another small village in Nangethanti before reaching the beautiful hill station of Ghorepani.
Day 3: Early from Ghorepani Poon Hill and Trek to Tadapani
On the 3rd trek day, we will wake up early to watch the sunrise with a close view of Annapurna South, Himchuli, Annapurna III, and Machhapuchhre. After breakfast, we will start our trek, which is mostly a walk through the jungle to the charming village of Tadapani via Thapla Danda.
Day 4: Trek from Tadapani to Kilu and then return to Pokhara
We will go down using many stone steps leading to the entrance of Ghandruk village. After 5-6 hours of walking downhill, we will reach Kilu, where we will catch our ride. From Kilu or Syauli Bazar, we will travel on a paved road to Birethanti, Nayapul. From Nayapul, we will take the Baglung-Pokhara highway and reach Pokhara in the next 2 hours. You will be taken to your hotel in Lakeside, back to Pokhara, which indicates the conclusion of our Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek.
The Poon Hill trekking route travels through dense jungles with Rhododendrons, fir, birch, bamboo, and juniper. You’ll mostly walk through these lush forests. As you climb above Ghorepani, you’ll see the pine vegetation of the Tropical highlands. The trek starts from Nayapul and follows the foot trails of rural villages. We then pass through the towns of Ulleri to reach Ghorepani.
From Ghorepani, we first go up to Poonhill and descend to Tadapani village. The route to Poonhill is Nayapul – Birethanti – Hile – Ulleri – Ghorepani – Poonhill – Tadapani – Ghandruk – Kilu or Syauli Bazaar. The initial stretch involves steep staircases made of piled stones. The route is dotted with small villages of Magar and Gurung people. The vegetation changes from Subtropical to Tropical as you climb. Although there are some switchback ascents during the trek, it’s suitable for beginners with short daily walking durations.
Major Attractions of Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek
Poon Hill Trek is one of the most beautiful and quite underrated treks in Nepal. Despite being among the easy trek in the Annapurna region compared to other major trekking spots like Annapurna Base Camp Trek and the Annapurna Circuit Trek, Poon Hill Trek also has major attractions that can make it stand on its own. So here are some of the major attractions of the trek to Poon Hill.
Wide Views of Mountains
One of the major attractions of the Poon Hill Trek is the stunning views of the mountains. Since Poon Hill lies above an altitude of 3200m, when you reach the top of the Poon Hill viewpoint, you will see stunning views of mountains like Annapurna, Gangapurna, Hiunchuli, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri etc. The views of the mountains are even more crisp and clear during sunrise and sunset.
Natural Hot Springs
Another major attraction of the Poon Hill Trek is the opportunity to lie in the natural hot springs when you reach the highly popular and crowded Jhinu Danda. Jhinu Danda has a natural hot spring where you can lay and feel refreshed and rejuvenated from the day-to-day long treks. Some elders even believe soaking in the hot springs heals the pain and aches in bones and joints, which is an additional advantage.
New Culture
The primary attraction of Poon Hill Trek is to explore the villages, cities, and settlements filled with different ethnic groups of people like Gurungs, Magars, Tharus etc. They have their own culture, traditions, festivals, rituals, foods, drinks and dances. Make sure whenever you are visiting Poon Hill, you meet the local people, visit the pubs, teahouses, temples, and monasteries and immerse yourself in new cultures.
Best Time to Trek Poon Hill
The Ghorepani Poon Hill is one of the most beautiful trekking spots in Nepal, and it is also not difficult. However, if you want to make the trek even more accessible and the surrounding area looks stunning, then you should book the trek in the best time. In Nepal, the best time to trek Poon Hill depends on the ideal seasons. The two ideal seasons for trekking in Nepal are Spring and Autumn.
Spring
Spring is one of the best season for trekking the Poon Hill. This season starts in March and ends in May. The initial days of March begin after the completion of the winter season. As the spring season in Nepal starts, the region begins to get vibrant and beautiful. The treks to Poon Hill start blooming with rhododendron and magnolias forests. In the Spring season, the conditions for trekking become even more ideal, such as stable weather, mild temperature, and clear views of skies and mountains. If you plan to hike in Spring, book your accommodation early as there will be an oversurge of crowds in this season.
Autumn
Autumn is another season ideal for trekking Poon Hill. Like Spring, many trekkers believe Autumn to be perfect for trekking hills and valleys around Nepal, and some even believe that Autumn might be the best season for trekking overall. The Autumn season begins in the middle of September and ends in November.
The initial days may receive slight rainfall in this season as it falls in the post-monsoon season. One of the major attractions of trekking in the Autumn season is the majestic views of the mountains and fresh air of the Himalayas. Like the spring season, the autumn season is also overcrowded, so book your trekking activities and accommodation facilities.
Winter Season
Winter is among Nepal’s least ideal trekking seasons, especially for high-altitude treks. However, since Poon Hill is a low-altitude trek, trekking in winter doesn’t hinder it too much. However, the high altitude and snowy route will impact the trekking trails. However, a bit of a challenge trekking Poon Hill in the winter season is equally enjoyable as the Spring and Autumn season. Furthermore, compared to the other two seasons, this season, the trails and the teahouses are not as overcrowded so if you want a peaceful trek, then you can book the Poon Hill trek in the winter.

Had the best 4 days Poon Hill trek, beautiful weather and views. My guide Umesh was amazing, patient but encouraging. Had fruit for the day for me and picked me berries along the path for me to try. Was very attentive on the evenings and we played card games together as well as having solo time. The company owner was very responsive and helpful and met me to discuss details and even booked buses from ktm to Pokhara for me. Would recommend as very reasonably priced and positive experience! Thank you both 🙂

I have booked the trip in last min and managed to have a private tour guide for 5 days Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. The price was competitive and it is personalised to my time and preference.
As a beginner with no prior trek training, it was not possible to make it without the help of my tour guide – Surpa. He is caring and supportive along the 5 days trek.
I managed to view the beautiful Annapurna range from Poon Hill and it is definitely a once in a lifetime experience for me.
Thank you for all the arrangement and accommodations. Would definitely recommend Surpa and Himalayan Trip to all!!!

I finished 4-day-3-night Poon Hill Trek with my aunt who is an experienced hiker. While I am the beginner, both of us received good guidance and company from our guide, Sandeep and porter, Mani. We were always companied by one of them, safety being ensured all the time.
The trek was overall not too challenging but could be tough for those without hiking experience hiking for consecutive four days. Over the 4 days, we stayed in 3 nice hotels with fabulous views. Though it was sometimes cloudy after rains, we still managed to see the snow mountains from our rooms. And when we reached Poon Hill, the view was breath-taking and absolutely worth it!

We went 3N 4D trekking to poon hill. The weather was not always helpful but the whole experience was once in a life time. It was end of Feb and still very cold at night tea houses. We took the sleeping bag liner with us instead of actually sleeping bag to carry less weight and it was a great choice. Our guide Ramesh was really experienced and knowledgeable. He played multiple roles as a guide, server and private butler during the entire trekking to make sure our trip is comfortable.

We book three activities with Himalaya Trip and the experience was amazing. Harka, the team leader was very friendly. He takes care of us at every moment and we feel very confortable. The same happened with the guides we meet in each activity, they were very nice. I highly reccomend to do a trek in Nepal, we didn’t have lot of days, so we choose the Poon Hill Trek. It was very good, the wheather was so clear that the last day we saw the sunrise in Poon Hill, the view of the Annapurnas was fascinating. Through the route you visit many villages, but the last one, Ghandruk, was the best end point we could had. Hope one day we could repeat and do the Annapurna Circuit…

I had the most amazing Ghorepani – Poon Hill trek with my family visiting from India
organized by Himalaya Trip . The experience
was many times better than anticipated. Harka had extensively briefed us on the
preparation needed in advance as well as the route, both over email and in person at the
hotel, which made us comfortable. Our guide Surpa was super fantastic and took care of
it all (literally every step of the way). I would go back and highly recommend it.

I have met many guides in different countries but none like him. He was very caring, professional, and overall helped me a lot in many ways. Thanks to him I will remember the trekking trip and Nepal in a very positive manner.
If I ever do come back to Nepal, which I hope I do in the near future, I would definitely like to make trip arrangements with you and have Surpa as my guide.
Thank you once again for arranging my trip, it was the highlight of the vacation. I’d also like to thank you for pairing Surpa to be my guide. He was indeed a very very great and sweet guide.
Take care and I hope to talk with you in the near future.

I am Ramesh Gurung from Chitwan. After teaching for several years in primary school. I have switched my work to a trekking guide. At first, I started my work as a trekking porter to know the trekking trail and mountain names. After working few years, I took trekking guide training. I am a government-certified trekking guide. I have been working on the Himalaya Trip. I am a specialized trekking guide of the most popular destinations like Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu region. I can communicate in English. I have a lot of experience in the Himalayas. As well as the stunning scenery trekkers often find it interesting to hear bits and pieces about local culture, religions, norms, caste history, and environmental issues. This helps the trekker appreciate the different world they have stepped into.
