Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek Overview

The 5-Day Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek is a shorter version of the classic Annapurna Base Camp route, designed for travelers who want to stand at 4130 m beneath the Annapurna massif without following the standard 7-9 day itinerary. This shorter timeframe is possible because the trek uses a jeep or private vehicle to skip the lower, less scenic areas of the trail between Nayapul and Chhomrong.

It suits travelers with limited vacation time, moderately fit trekkers looking for a manageable challenge, and anyone who wants to experience high-altitude Himalayan trekking without spending a long time on the trail. The route traverses Siwai, Samrung, Sinuwa, and Deurali before climbing to ABC, then continues through Bamboo before heading back to Pokhara for the return journey.

On the way, you’ll pass Gurung villages where prayer flags and small monasteries reflect Tibetan-Buddhist and Gurung heritage of the region. These settlements offer opportunities to interact with local families, learn about traditional farming and herding practices, and rest in teahouses run by the same communities for generations.

Entering the Annapurna Sanctuary, an amphitheater-like basin, you’ll get close-range views of Machhapuchhre (6993 m)/ Fishtail, Annapurna South (7219 m), and Hiunchuli (6441 m), with Annapurna I (8091 m) visible at the head of the sanctuary. Unlike the Annapurna Circuit, which loops around the entire massif over two to three weeks and crosses the Thorong La pass, the Short ABC Trek stays within a single valley system focused on the sanctuary itself.

What sets the 5-Day Annapurna Base Camp Trek apart is its comfort and mountain achievement: teahouse lodges provide hot meals, private rooms, and warm bedding, while the trek still delivers the physical accomplishment of reaching 4130 m and the cultural experience of staying overnight in working Gurung villages.

So, if you still have not decided whether to trek the Annapurna Base Camp, we hope our detailed guide on this 5-Day Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek will convince you. Let’s get into it.

The first day of the short 5-day Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek starts with a drive from Pokhara to Samrung. The drive is about 66 km, and it will take about 3 hours to reach Samrung. After reaching Samrung, your trek starts, and today’s overnight destination is Sinuwa. The trek from Samrung starts with crossing quite a few suspension bridges. Since it is the first day, you will be full of energy, and the scenic village surroundings will surely lift your mood.

As you progress, you will also come across green meadows and see big yaks grazing in the field. The inhabitants of these areas are Gurung, who are mostly busy in their agriculture, and depending on the season you visit, you will see beautiful flowers, crops, and produce in the field. After trekking for four hours, you will reach today’s destination in Sinuwa, following a small village in Chhomrong. Overnight stay in a private room at Kalpana Guest house at Lower Sinuwa.

Sinuwa is in the Annapurna Conservation Area in the Gandaki Province of Nepal. It is about 2340 m above sea level. Green forests and beautiful landscapes surround the village. Many trekkers stop here on their way to Annapurna’s base camp, one of the world’s highest peaks.

But as you move forward, you will eventually reach the steep climb, testing your physical endurance. When we reach the other side of the steep ascents, we will see small villages like Dovan and Bamboo. We will keep moving forward till we reach the hill station named Himalaya, where you can take a little breather. After some hours of the trek, you’ll reach Deurali, where you will stay overnight at Dream Lodge, a room with 2-5 people sharing.

The third day of this trek is essential, as you will reach the stunning Annapurna Base Camp today. However, a trekking day is 5-6 hours long ahead of us. We will first move forward from Deurali and start climbing for about two hours to reach the fantastic Annapurna Sanctuary area. Since ABC is in the conservation area, we must first issue the entry permit, which won’t take long unless the trail is overcrowded.

After about 3 hours of trekking, we will reach Machhapuchhre Base Camp, from which you’ll see some of the region’s best mountain views. Machhapuchhre Base Camp is about 3700m tall, so after a little tea break, we will move forward and start climbing the glacial terrain until we reach the altitude of 4,130 m, which is the elevation of Annapurna Base Camp.

First of all, the views from here are even more majestic, and there will be a sense of achievement among you and your crew. You will see lots of prayer flags shaking in the wind, showing that many more trekkers have followed the same path as you. You’ll spend the day exploring the base camp and then stay the night at Annapurna Sanctuary Lodge or similar, a room with 2-5 people sharing basis.

The early sunrise view from the Annapurna Base Camp is even more majestic than the last day. We will slowly enjoy our breakfast to appreciate the Annapurna Base Camp’s amazing views fully. This will give us plenty of time to enjoy the 360-degree Himalayan scenery.

Now, it’s time to move on and descend the altitude. We will return to the Bamboo or Sinuwa Village based on where you stayed. When you travel in reverse, the trail looks completely different, but you might notice some important or beautiful views you have seen earlier. After about 6-7 hours of trekking, you’ll reach today’s destination in Bamboo, where you will stay overnight at Green View Lodge or similar a room with 2-5 people sharing basis.

The final day of the 5-Day Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek is upon us. Today, we will continue to retrace our steps as you start trekking from Bamboo. Depending on the season you visit, the trail will be covered by rhododendrons and oak trees as you reach today’s destination. As we descend towards Sinuwa, Chhomrong, we will descend to the amazing Jhinu Danda and enjoy the fantastic natural hot springs. After five days of the intense trek, this is the place to relax and rejuvenate, and your fatigue will melt away.

The trek takes about 5-6 hours to reach Jhinu and Samrung. The distance from Bamboo to Samrung is about 10 km, but you won’t feel as tired as you have to descend most of the time.

After the Lunch at Jhinu, we will pack again and then walk for 20 minutes to Samrung. After arriving in Samrung, take a bus or jeep for 3 hours drive back to Pokhara. Once you check in at your hotel, an amazing five-day Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek ends here. You can go to Kathmandu immediately or stay one more day and explore Pokhara Lakeside at night.

FAQs for Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek

General

The Short ABC Trek takes 5 days from Pokhara back to Pokhara. It covers about 48 kilometers total, using a jeep drive to Samrung on both ends to skip the lower trail sections on the standard 7-day route.

Start training at least one month ahead with cardio like jogging, hiking, or cycling. Add stair climbing and leg-strengthening exercises since the trail has thousands of stone steps. Aim to comfortably walk 5-6 hours on tough ground before you go.

It’s possible for beginners with good fitness, but it’s more demanding than the standard version because of the fast pace. First-time trekkers should prepare physically beforehand and consider the standard 7-day trek instead if unsure about handling long days.

It’s not recommended for young children or elderly trekkers because of the fast altitude gain and long daily walking hours. The standard 7-day or 9-day version is a safer option for these age groups.

Guide and Porter

Yes, the standard package includes a licensed guide only. A porter is an optional add-on you can request separately at booking, and most trekkers hire one to carry the heavier gear.

A porter costs around USD 20 per day, covering their food, lodging, and service. One porter carries bags for two trekkers, up to about 18-20 kilograms combined, over the 5-day trek.

Yes, solo trekkers are paired one-on-one with a guide, and this is actually common on the Short ABC Trek. Guides carry a pulse oximeter to check oxygen levels daily, which matters more on a quick itinerary like this one.

Transportation and Logistic

Yes, this can be added to your booking. You can travel by a 25-30 minute domestic flight or a 6-8 hour drive or tourist bus. Flights are faster but cost more, while the road option is cheaper and more scenic.

Yes, but the jeep road can get muddy or blocked during heavy monsoon rain between June and August. During these periods, drivers sometimes divert through nearby villages, which can add 30-45 minutes to the drive.

Foods and Accommodation

Yes, a sleeping bag rated for at least -10°C is recommended. Teahouse rooms at Deurali and ABC have poor insulation and thin blankets, so your own sleeping bag makes a real difference in staying warm overnight.

Dal bhat is the best food, since it comes with free refills on rice and lentils and gives you energy for long walking days. Other solid options are garlic soup, noodles, and momos at most teahouses on the route.

Yes, vegetarian food is easy to find, since dal bhat, vegetable curry, and noodles are naturally meat-free. Vegan options are more limited but available, mainly rice, lentils, vegetables, and plain noodles without butter or eggs.

We can arrange hotel bookings in both cities if requested at the time of booking. This isn’t included in the standard trek package, so let us know your budget and preferred dates in advance.

Yes, garlic soup is a popular local remedy served at teahouses above 3,000 m. While it isn’t a medical cure for altitude sickness, many trekkers and guides use it to help with mild headaches and digestion at high altitudes.

Weather

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to do the Short ABC. Winter brings heavy snow and cold above 3,000 m, while monsoon season causes rain, leeches, and slippery trails.

Views are limited in monsoon, from June to August, due to clouds and rain covering the peaks most days. Trails also get slippery, and leeches are common in the lower forest areas, so this season isn’t recommend

Health and Difficulty

Yes, every guide carries a first aid kit and a pulse oximeter to check your oxygen level and heart rate daily.

The risk is higher than the standard trek because you sleep at 3,200m and 4,130m on back-to-back nights. This exceeds the recommended safe ascent rate, so watch for symptoms and consider Diamox.

Yes, adding one extra day as a rest stop at Chhomrong or Sinuwa gives your body more time to adjust before the final push to Deurali and ABC, lowering your overall altitude sickness risk.

Guides carry basic first aid and oxygen level monitors to catch problems early. In serious cases, helicopter evacuation is arranged from ABC or MBC.

Booking and document submission

You can book directly through our website or by contacting us with your preferred dates. A deposit is required to confirm your spot, followed by permit processing using your passport details before the trek begins.

The meeting point is your hotel in Pokhara on Day 1. The remaining balance is paid in cash before departure or on arrival, after the initial deposit confirms your booking.

Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek Altitude and Acclimatization

Getting used to the height is the biggest thing to think about on this trek, because you’re gaining it so fast. Doctors say you shouldn’t sleep more than 300 to 500 m higher each night once you pass 3,000 m, but Day 2 and Day 3 of this trek both go well beyond that. You start in Pokhara at just 822 m and by the end of Day 1 you’re already sleeping at Sinuwa, 2360 m up. Day 2 takes you from Sinuwa to Deurali at 3200 m, and Day 3 pushes further still, all the way to Annapurna Base Camp at 4130 m. Those two nights are where most people start to feel the height, so it helps to know what’s coming and plan around it rather than being caught off guard.

There are a few simple things that make a real difference here. Walk slowly and steadily, and don’t try to keep up with faster hikers or rush to reach the next teahouse early. Your body handles height much better when your heart rate stays calm rather than racing. Drink more water than you think you need, around 4 to 5 liters a day, since the mountain air is dry and you lose water fast just from breathing harder up there. Skip alcohol, sleeping pills, and cigarettes during the trek, as all three make it harder for your body to get enough oxygen while you sleep and can make you feel much worse overnight.

ABC  Short Trek Difficulty

The 5-Day Annapurna Base Camp Trek is moderately difficult to strenuous. The regular version of this trek takes around 7-9 days and gives your body plenty of time to get used to the height. This short version fits the same climb into less than half that time, which means longer walking days and less rest in between. You’ll be on your feet for 5 to 7 hours most days and cover close to 48 km by the end of the trip. Day 2 alone has an 11 km route from Sinuwa to Deurali, and Day 4 brings a steep 14 km walk back down from ABC to Bamboo.

The bigger concern on this trek is altitude, because you’re gaining height so fast. You’ll sleep at 3200 m on the second night and then head straight up to 4130 m the very next day. Most guides suggest not sleeping more than 500 m higher each night once you pass 3000 m, and this trek asks you to go beyond that.

There’s also a narrow area of trail between Deurali and Machhapuchhre Base Camp where the path squeezes through a tight river canyon. This part crosses old avalanche paths, so if you’re trekking in late winter or early spring, it pays to check conditions before heading through.

Incredible!

Hi! Im Sara, from Spain!
Good morning!
Yesterday we arrived from our 11-day trekking in Gokyo.
There were 3 people from Spain, and I don’t know how to express how happy I felt.
From the beginning, Himalaya Trip has been attentive to us, with a welcome at the hotel and explanation of the route, rental of necessary equipment, etc.
The most important thing for us has been the ease and comfort with which Ramesh (our precious guide) has taken care of us at all time.
Attentive to the food, to make sure we didn’t get cold, adapting the route day by day according to the needs of the team.

I only have words of gratitude for Ramesh, who I would recommend for any trekking in the world.
In addition to being a great guide and knowing all the mountains of Nepal perfectly, he is a great person, with a big heart.

We hope to repeat in the not too distant future and hopefully it can be with him, since he is already part of our family.
Thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart.

Thanks!!!!

Mardi Himal: fantastic trek & wonderful guide

I had an amazing time trekking with Surpa, particularly as this was my first solo trek. Beautiful views doing the Mardi Himal trek over 4 days, Surpa was a great guide who organised everything so well for me, kept me well fed, supported a good pace the whole way and always cheerful. Would recommend, and I would happily have him as my guide again in the future. The organisation and booking with Himalaya Trip was great, really responsive on emails and Harka was so helpful in organising everything and meeting me in Kathmandu for a briefing before the trip. Thanks so much!

Once in a lifetime experience in the Himalayas

Our 4 day Mardi Himal Trek with guide Milan and porter Plekta was a wonderful experience. The manager Harka Gurung met with us over coffee in Kathmandu and briefed us about expectations as this was our first trek. After that our guide met us at our hotel in Pokhara, helped us rent equipment, and handled all logistics in between. Our first time in the Himalayas was unforgettable between all the unbelievable landscapes and scenery, and we were lucky to have MIlan and Plekta with us to experience it all. I can’t begin to describe how ethereal sunrise is over the base camp, but hopefully you’ll be able to experience it soon!
