Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world, towering at 8849m from sea level. It was derived from Sir George Everest, who hired Ramanath Sikdhdar, the first person to observe Mount Everest. It is one of Nepal’s major attractions and has attracted many trekkers who want to climb its peak or explore the Everest Base Camp. Everest Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s most popular and commercial trekking destinations. In this blog, we will learn more about the highest peak and answer the most critical question: Where is Mount Everest Located?
Mount Everest’s local name in Nepal is Sagarmatha, meaning “Goddess of the Sky,” whereas in Tibet, it is called Chomolungma, meaning “Mother of the World.” Climbing Mount Everest is on the bucket list for many adventure and thrill seekers; however, it is not easy.
About 800 people climb Sagarmatha yearly, whereas almost 1,00,000 visit Sagarmatha National Park and head for trekking in the base camp. Mount Everest has become the primary symbol that has introduced its location and the country as a whole to the outer world. So, let’s talk about Mount Everest’s location.
Table of Contents
The Exact Location Of Mount Everest
Mount Everest is located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. Its summit part runs across the Nepal-China border and is also the border landmark separating the two countries’ areas. The South side of the peak lies in Nepal, whereas the north side can be explored through China. Mount Everest is in the Khumbu municipality in the Solukhumbu district in the conservative area of the Sagarmatha National Park.
The Himalayan range in Asia, also known as the Higher Himalayas or Great Himalayan Range, has some of the tallest peaks in the world. These peaks separate the plains of the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau. The Himalayan range spans six countries: Nepal, Bhutan, China, Bhutan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India. Mount Everest is accessible from Tibet or Nepal; however, there are tons of regulations and difficulties in accessing the Sagarmatha from the Tibet side, so many trekkers or climbers visit Nepal to access Mount Everest easily.
How High is Mount Everest?
Mount Everest is the highest peak globally, elevating at 8849m. It is Nepal’s principal landmark, representing the country to the world. Furthermore, the attraction of climbing the world’s highest peak and getting that sense of achievement when you are successful is the best feeling for adventure seekers and peak climbers.
Despite being among the highest peaks in the world, the death rate of Mount Everest is comparatively lower than other peaks in Nepal and around the world. Here is a comparison of Mount Everest with other peaks worldwide.

Nepal is a gifted country in the sense of mountains, as 8 of the ten highest peaks in the world lie in Nepal. Only Mount K2 and Nanga Parbat mountains are outside of Nepal.
How to get to Mount Everest?
When talking about getting to Mount Everest, people often mean two things. First, I will climb the peak of Mount Everest, and second, I will reach the mountain base in Everest Base Camp. Climbing Mount Everest is much more challenging and risky than just visiting the base camp. As mentioned above, you can get to Mount Everest from the Tibet side, but since Nepal is more accessible, we will talk about how you can reach it from the Southern side. First, you must reach Everest Base Camp before considering Mount Everest.
You have to board a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. After landing in Lukla, you will walk through small villages like Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Pheriche, and Lobuche. From Lobuche, you will arrive at Gorakhstep, and from there, you will start hiking towards Everest Base Camp.
Once you reach Everest Base Camp, the trek becomes grave if you want to climb the peak of Mount Everest. It is important to remember the direct distance or the crow’s distance from the base camp to the peak of Mount Everest is only 5.5 miles. However, the actual climbing distance is way longer due to the camp stops and the route diverting for acclimatization. The exact distance traveled can be from 60 to 80 miles.
From Everest Base Camp, you will first visit South Base Camp, which falls on the South Col route. From there, the climbers will navigate to the Khumbu icefall, leading them to Western Cwm. This valley between Mount Everest and Lhotse is the perfect place for Camp 1 at an altitude of over 6065m and Camp 2 at over 6400m. The next day, you will hike above Camp 2 and reach Lhotse Face, where the climbers create Camp 3 for acclimatization.

Was referred to Harka by a friend who had done the 12 Days EBC Trek a few months before, and he was very easy to contact and quick to respond. We were a bit uneasy about booking with someone from the other side of the world, but Harka proved himself to be honest, professional, and reputable while organising our trip for us. Once we were in Kathmandu, he was easy to meet up with and was quick to help us out with anything we needed. Our guide, Mr. Dil, who met us in Lukla, was what really made our trip as amazing as it was. He was extremely knowledgable on the mountains and mountain passes, as well as getting us into tea houses and our flight home. He was very professional, friendly, and easy to work with, even though his English was a bit broken. Overall, it was an incredible trip, and I wouldn’t hesitate to book with Harka again. If you do the EBC, ask for Dil, he’s the man.

I booked a private trek to Everest Base Camp so it was just myself and my guide / porter trekking together for 12 days. As a solo traveller I always invest a lot of time in to researching the company I book with, it was important to me to do this with a Nepalese tour company and the previous reviews were so encouraging and positive I decided to contact Himalaya Trip to see what they had to offer.
Harka responded almost immediately despite the time difference and sent me detailed information on the Everest Base Camp trek. He answered all my questions and always replied quickly which continued to give me confidence. They were also very competitively priced compared to other local companies and along with the great reviews I had a good feeling that Harka and his team would be the ones to get me to EBC.
Harka met me at the airport, took me to my hotel and helped get me any last minute bits I needed for the trek in Kathmandu. He made everything very easy and I felt safe and reassured the whole time which is important to me as a solo female traveller.
My guide / porter was called Dil and he was the man I was spending 12 days with trekking to EBC. Dil was fantastic, he looked out for me every step of the way, regularly checking in to ensure I was ok and did everything to make my experience on the trek as comfortable and as safe as possible. Dil was so knowledgable about the area and the mountains he would point out everything along the way. Despite him speaking broken English we could quite easily chat and communicate without any problems.
The trek was an incredible experience and one of the toughest yet most amazing things I’ve ever done and part of that was down to the efficiency and professionalism of Harka and his team. I didn’t have to worry or think about a thing, just getting to EBC.

I had a great time on my walk to Everest Base Camp from Himalaya Trip Team.
I have many positive comments and the main ones are:
– You were very efficient and helpful before I arrived, answering all my questions promptly and effectively so I knew what to expect when I arrived.
– I was met at the airport as planned, had a good briefing from you at the hotel and the hotel was comfortable.
– Everything happened as planned and it was a good timetable enabling me to to walk at my own pace and to properly acclimatise to altitude on the way up.
– My guide, Om Gurung, was excellent and very attentive. He obtained single accommodation for me every night and always checked that I had everything I needed before he looked after himself. When I was unwell on the way down he carefully monitored me, gave me throat tablets and did everything he could to ensure I was comfortable.
– My porter, Bikas, also did a very good job and was always helpful and pleasant.
– The standard of the lodges was good. The only comment is that often the washing facilities were sometimes very limited and at some lodges only consisted of a tap low down beside the toilet! This is not a comment about your company as I think it applies whichever company one uses. It is just difficult to understand why the washing facilities are often so limited and in short supply when all other features of the lodges are very comfortable!
– The price of the trek was competitive compared to some companies but the standard of care was equally good.

In the final stretch of your expedition, you will reach South Col, where Camp 4 is formed above the altitude of 7900m. The peak of Everest is very near as you get the Hillary step. The slope is steep here, so you need a fixed rock to make climbing easier. Finally, the next stop is the summit of Mount Everest at an elevation of 8849m.
Climate and Weather Of Mount Everest
Naturally, the climate and weather of Mount Everest will be frigid and challenging for climbers. The slopes of Everest are covered with glaciers. There are different glaciers around the mountain like Kangshung Glacier to the east, East, Central, and West Rongbuk glaciers to the north and northwest, Pumori Glacier to the northwest, and Khumbu Glacier to the west and south. Glacial action has been the leading force causing erosion of Everest and other high Himalayan peaks.
The water from the Khumbu Glacier in Nepal flows into the Lobujya River, which becomes the Imja River. In Tibet, the Rong River comes from the Pumori and Rongbuk Glaciers, and the Kama River comes from the Kangshung Glacier. Both flow into the Arun River, which passes through the Himalayas into Nepal. The Rong, Dudh Kosi, and Kama river valleys form the northern, southern, and eastern routes to the summit of Everest.
Death Zone on Mount Everest
One of the fascinating aspects of climbing Mount Everest is its challenge, but it still attracts many trekkers and peak climbers. One even more intriguing fact is the mystery surrounding the peak of Mount Everest. Every climb closer to the summit has to pass through the death zone.
At an altitude above 8000m during the climb of Mount Everest summit, a body can’t function properly for an extended time. Such elevation near the summit is called the death zone. The central fatality rate of Everest Base Camp generally falls in the death zone. It is because the oxygen level is at a drastic low, and the body gives in after relentless treks and climbs for several days.
So, what happens to the human body in the death zone? When people go to high places, their bodies may not get enough oxygen. This can cause health problems. The brain and other organs need enough oxygen to work well. If they don’t get enough, they can’t work correctly. At higher altitudes, people may start to feel sick.
They might get dizzy, have headaches, or feel short of breath. As they go even higher, the effects can get worse. They might have trouble thinking, feel confused, pass out, and, in the end, die. How harmful these effects are depends on how long and how much they don’t get enough oxygen.
Everest Base Camp Trek Difficulty
As everyone knows, climbing Mount Everest might be fun and challenging, so many people are looking for alternatives to trekking at Everest Base Camp. Despite being fun and less complicated than climbing the peak of Mount Everest, there are some challenges. Certain factors make the Everest Base Camp Trek more challenging than others, and they are:
Altitude
High-altitude trekking is enjoyable and challenging for local and foreign trekkers. However, one major factor that raises the trek difficulty is Altitude. You will be trekking above the altitude of 4000m for a few days and even reach an altitude of over 5500m. The risk of altitude sickness is very high, 3500m.
Duration and Distance
Another minor difficulty that trekkers face is the long distance and duration. The EBC trek is about ten days long, and trekkers have to trek for at least six to seven hours per day, which will take a toll on the body of trekkers. Hence, before trekking, it is essential to maintain physical stamina and mental endurance; furthermore, you also have to take care of your body and, during the trekking, keep your hydration level. Dehydration during the treks can also lead to altitude trekking.
Conclusion
Hence, if you were wondering where Mount Everest is located? We hope you got your answer. Mount Everest is the symbol and pride of Nepal and is the home of the Sherpa people of the country; they have dedicated their lives to protecting the region. Despite being the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest is still a major attraction for trekkers and peak climbers who want adventure and a sense of accomplishment.
However, if climbing Mount Everest is a bit more challenging, you can trek to Everest Base Camp. Everest Base Camp is far easier to complete than Everest climbing, and you will have an almost equal sense of adventure in the Himalayas.
