Poon Hill is one of the best moderate-level trekking destinations in Nepal. Over the years, this trek has gotten amazing reviews from trekkers for being one of the best beginner-friendly treks in Nepal. This trek is extremely beautiful, but if trekkers want to experience even more majestic views, then they should try Poon Hill Trek in Spring. One of the main highlights of the Poon Hill trek is the amazing 360-degree views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. This trek is ideal for trekkers with families, small kids, or elderly parents.
You can trek to Poon Hill in any season, but Spring is the ideal time. The weather is stable, with moderate temperatures, and colorful Rhododendrons and other flowers bloom along the trail, including birch, juniper, fir, and bamboo. The trek starts in Nayapul, where trekkers pass through beautiful Magar and Gurung villages. After going through Ulleri and Ghorepani, you reach Poon Hill. This famous viewpoint takes about an hour to hike. The sunrise over the mountains, lakes, and valleys from Poon Hill is stunning and definitely worth seeing. The Poon Hill trek is short, and there is a driving option to Ghorepani for those with limited time or who find trekking difficult. For the best experience of Poon Hill and its surroundings, we recommend trekking in the Spring season.

Why Poon Hill trek is best in Spring Season?
Stable weather and moderate temperature
Spring in the Annapurna region offers stable weather, minimizing heavy rainfall or snowstorms. This stability allows trekkers to enjoy uninterrupted views and comfortable conditions, with daytime temperatures usually ranging from 15°C to 25°C. At night, temperatures drop from 5°C to 10°C, making warm layers necessary but still manageable for a restful sleep after a day of trekking.
Clear Skies and Best Views
Spring is known for clear skies and sunny days. This clear weather offers great visibility, allowing people to see the beautiful Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, including the famous Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) peak. The major attraction of the Poon Hill trek is the beautiful views of sunrise and sunset, which is even stunning during the Spring season.
Blooming Rhododendrons and Seasonal Flowers
In spring, the trekking trails become full of color as rhododendrons, Nepal’s national flower, bloom everywhere. Other seasonal flowers, along with rhododendrons, create a colorful and beautiful environment.
Comfortable walking trails
With the winter snow melting and the monsoon rains yet to arrive, the trails are generally dry and in excellent condition during spring. This makes for comfortable and safe walking, reducing the risk of slips and falls. The Spring season attracts parents with kids to try the Poon Hill due to the comfortable walking trails.
Availability of teahouses
Spring is a busy time for trekking, so teahouses along the Poon Hill trek are fully open. Trekkers have many options for places to stay and food to eat. Since it’s peak season, the teahouses are well-prepared for many guests. The trails along the teahouses and the teahouses themselves are extremely crowded, so if you prefer trekking with crowds all around, trekking Poon Hill in Spring is for you.
Best time to see rhododendron flowers during Poon Hill Trek
The prime time to witness the vibrant rhododendron blooms along the Poon Hill Trek is during the spring season, specifically from mid-March to late April. During this time, the hillsides turn into a beautiful mix of colors filled with vibrant rhododendrons. These rhododendrons can be different shades of color, like pink, red, and white. Due to charming rhododendrons, clear weather, and beautiful skies, the Spring is the crowded season for Poon Hill Trek.
In terms of months, April is often considered the peak month for rhododendron blooms in the Poon Hill area. You’ll now encounter these beautiful flowers’ most vibrant and abundant displays. Additionally, the weather conditions in April are generally very favorable for trekking, with comfortable temperatures and excellent visibility. However, trekking during March and May also offers excellent opportunities to see rhododendrons, and those months can offer less crowded trails.
Poon Hill Trek in Each Month
Poon Hill Trek in March
March is the beginning of Spring month and the end of cold. The day is normally warm but not very sunny, and the morning and night are slightly cold. During the Poon Hill Trek, the day temperature ranges between 5°C to 20°C and during the night, it ranges from 5°C to 0°C. Since it is the beginning of Spring, the time to bloom rhododendron flowers. The trails are also not very crowded, and teahouses are abundant. This month is ideal for trekkers seeking less crowd, a peaceful environment, and a perfect temperature.
April is the peak season for Poon Hill Trek in Nepal. Generally, the weather is warm and sunny, with the day temperature ranging between 10°C to 25°C and the night temperature ranging between 5°C to 0°C. The trails are covered with colorful rhododendrons and other seasonal flowers. Since it is the peak season, it is crowded, and teahouses must be used as a sharing area. So, we suggest booking in peak seasons. The skies are clear, offering awesome views of the surrounding area. Some trekkers might find it hard to trek on the bright sunny days. But, Poon Hill’s viewpoint in the morning is chilly. So, pack clothes accordingly.
Poon Hill Trek in May
May marks the end of the Poon Hill Trek Spring season and the beginning of Monsoon, so some slowdown in the crowds can be observed. The weather is warm during the day, and mornings and nights are slightly cold. The day temperature ranges between 5°C to 25°C and the night temperature might fall below 0°C to (-5) °C. The end of May could possibly bring the rain. So, carrying a rain poncho or umbrella is recommended. Few seasonal flowers can be seen. The day is warm and comfortable to trek. The clear skies offer phenomenal surrounding views. Teahouse availability is abundant.
Permits for Poon Hill Trek
Trekkers’ Information Management Systems (TIMS) card and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) are two essential permits for Poon Hill Trek.
ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project)
Since the Poon Hill trek lies in the Annapurna region of Nepal, trekkers will need to issue an Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP) permit. It’s essentially your entry ticket to this incredible area, and it plays a vital role in keeping it beautiful. The National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) manages the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, or ACAP for short. They’re the professionals working hard to protect the region’s amazing natural wonders. When you buy your ACAP, you’re directly helping them fund their efforts. Trekkers can issue ACAP in Kathmandu and in Pokhara’s TAAN office.
The cost of Annapurna Conservation Area Permit is
For Foreign Nationals: Nepali Rupees 3,000.
For SAARC Nationals: Nepali Rupees 1,000.
For Nepali Nationals: Nepali Rupees 100.
TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System)
A Trekkers Information Management Systems (TIMS) Permit is important for your safety. You will be registered in the system by showing your TIMS card at checkpoints along the trails. This is crucial if you go missing or have an accident while trekking. You can issue the TIMS Card for Nepal from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu and the TAAN office in Pokhara.
The cost of a TIMS card is
For foreigners: NRS. 3000 (Approx. USD 20)
For SAARC Nationals: NRS. 1000 (Approx. USD 10)
Accommodation during the Spring Season
There are abundant teahouses during the Poon Hill trek. Spring season is peak season, but teahouses are available, so no need to worry. Teahouses are run by the locals, which are basic and have limited facilities but are comfortable to stay. The rooms have twin beds or bunk beds with blankets and pillows. Ulleri and Ghorepani routes have attached bathrooms, while Tadapani routes have shared bathrooms with hot showers. The bathroom style may be Western or squat style. We suggest easy use of personal toiletries (toilet paper, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, etc.). The basic room costs between NPR 500 and NPR 1000 (approximately USD 5 to USD 10) per night.
Food during the Spring Season
Various meals are served during the trek, including Nepali Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), noodles, mo:mo (dumplings), and continental dishes. You can also get beverages like tea, coffee, hot lemon, soft drinks, and bottled water. Dining halls at Ulleri, Ghorepani, and Tadapani have wooden heaters attached so trekkers can enjoy meals in a cozy and warm ambiance. The meals costs between NPR 800 to NPR 1200 (approximately USD 8 to USD 12) per meal.

Had the best 4 days Poon Hill trek, beautiful weather and views. My guide Umesh was amazing, patient but encouraging. Had fruit for the day for me and picked me berries along the path for me to try. Was very attentive on the evenings and we played card games together as well as having solo time. The company owner was very responsive and helpful and met me to discuss details and even booked buses from ktm to Pokhara for me. Would recommend as very reasonably priced and positive experience! Thank you both 🙂

I have booked the trip in last min and managed to have a private tour guide for 5 days Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. The price was competitive and it is personalised to my time and preference.
As a beginner with no prior trek training, it was not possible to make it without the help of my tour guide – Surpa. He is caring and supportive along the 5 days trek.
I managed to view the beautiful Annapurna range from Poon Hill and it is definitely a once in a lifetime experience for me.
Thank you for all the arrangement and accommodations. Would definitely recommend Surpa and Himalayan Trip to all!!!

I finished 4-day-3-night Poon Hill Trek with my aunt who is an experienced hiker. While I am the beginner, both of us received good guidance and company from our guide, Sandeep and porter, Mani. We were always companied by one of them, safety being ensured all the time.
The trek was overall not too challenging but could be tough for those without hiking experience hiking for consecutive four days. Over the 4 days, we stayed in 3 nice hotels with fabulous views. Though it was sometimes cloudy after rains, we still managed to see the snow mountains from our rooms. And when we reached Poon Hill, the view was breath-taking and absolutely worth it!

We went 3N 4D trekking to poon hill. The weather was not always helpful but the whole experience was once in a life time. It was end of Feb and still very cold at night tea houses. We took the sleeping bag liner with us instead of actually sleeping bag to carry less weight and it was a great choice. Our guide Ramesh was really experienced and knowledgeable. He played multiple roles as a guide, server and private butler during the entire trekking to make sure our trip is comfortable.

We book three activities with Himalaya Trip and the experience was amazing. Harka, the team leader was very friendly. He takes care of us at every moment and we feel very confortable. The same happened with the guides we meet in each activity, they were very nice. I highly reccomend to do a trek in Nepal, we didn’t have lot of days, so we choose the Poon Hill Trek. It was very good, the wheather was so clear that the last day we saw the sunrise in Poon Hill, the view of the Annapurnas was fascinating. Through the route you visit many villages, but the last one, Ghandruk, was the best end point we could had. Hope one day we could repeat and do the Annapurna Circuit…

I had the most amazing Ghorepani – Poon Hill trek with my family visiting from India

preparation needed in advance as well as the route, both over email and in person at the
hotel, which made us comfortable. Our guide Surpa was super fantastic and took care of

Hi Harka, My 4 Days Poonhill Trek was fantastic during the four days. I have had the most amazing time thanks to Surpa.
I have met many guides in different countries but none like him. He was very caring, professional, and overall helped me a lot in many ways. Thanks to him I will remember the trekking trip and Nepal in a very positive manner.
If I ever do come back to Nepal, which I hope I do in the near future, I would definitely like to make trip arrangements with you and have Surpa as my guide.
Thank you once again for arranging my trip, it was the highlight of the vacation. I’d also like to thank you for pairing Surpa to be my guide. He was indeed a very very great and sweet guide.
Take care and I hope to talk with you in the near future.

Although Poon Hill is among those treks which can be experienced in any season, trekking in Spring brings a whole different experience and fun. The season is perfect for trekkers with families, especially small children, who are not used to high-altitude trekking but want to enjoy the natural beauty of Nepal.
