Everest Three Passes Trek without EBC Details

Best Time for Trek in Nepal

Spring (March-May)

Spring is the ideal season for the Everest Three Passes Trek without EBC. The weather is consistent, warm enough, and provides good vistas. There is a lower probability of rain. Spring is also the best time for peak climbing because of the warmer temperatures and less snowfall. Ascending Renjo La Pass, Cho La Pass, and Khongma La Pass are less challenging than trekking in other seasons. At this time, the rhododendrons are in full bloom, creating a beautiful display of vibrant colors. The trails are also less crowded, creating a peaceful trekking experience.

Autumn (September-November)

Autumn is the most popular time for trekking in Nepal. This season offers clear, dry weather, allowing for stunning mountain views. The temperatures are also relatively mild, making it perfect for trekking. The days are very warm, and the nights are pretty cool. The average temperature during the day is approximately 20 degrees Celsius, while it may drop to 5 degrees Celsius at night at elevations ranging from 1000 to 3500 meters. However, the trekking trails will be pretty crowded at this time of the year.

Winter (December-Feburary)

Trekking the Everest Three Passes during winter can be risky due to icy and snow-covered trails. The weather outside is quite chilly, with plenty of snow at higher elevations, which can pose challenges for trekking. Traveling off-season has more disadvantages than advantages. The average temperature during the day rises to 17 degrees; at night, it falls below freezing. To be safe when trekking in cold weather at high altitudes, you must bring appropriate warm clothes.

Summer (June-August)

You should not trek the Everest Three Passes during summer/monsoon season. When it rains heavily, hiking on the trails can become challenging and unpleasant due to the frequent mud and slippery conditions. The heavy rain can cause landslides and flooding in certain areas, making the trails impassable. The heavy rainfalls in this season have insects like leeches and bugs while hiking in the forest.

Preparation for the 3 High Passes Trek

  • For the Everest Three Passes trek, you should focus on cardiovascular training as the terrain includes challenging uphill and downhill trekking, so building endurance is key.
  • Strength training is beneficial because it allows you to build muscle, enhance your balance and stability, and decrease your chance of injury.
  • Consider adding hill training to your routine. Trekking at high altitudes helps you practice hiking uphill and downhill.
  • To improve your endurance, you should slowly raise the length and intensity of your exercises.
  • Throughout the trek, you will be carrying a backpack with gear and supplies, so you should prepare by trying to hike with a heavy pack.
  • You should get used to high altitudes as the Everest Three Passes trek occurs at high altitudes.

How hard is the Everest Three Passes Trek without EBC?

The Everest Three Pass is strenuous and demanding to trek, and crampons are required for the slippery routes. Kongma La Pass is situated between the charming towns of Chukhung and Lobuche at an elevation of 5,535 meters. You have to hike to the highest pass in the Khumbu region. In the Khumbu region, Kongma La Pass is the highest pass along the three passes (Renjo La Pass, Cho La Pass, and Kongma La Pass).

During the winter, the route to these three highest passes is very difficult as there is high snow. Extreme cold at high altitudes is one of the most concerning parts of lengthy and altitude hiking. High altitudes may be challenging, and with sufficient rest and acclimatization, your body can reach such altitudes. You should know that all three passes are over 5,000 meters in elevation, so trekking at such altitude is quite challenging. This trekking trail can also be difficult as you must cross the mighty passes (Gokyo Ri) and even the Everest base Camp trek.

Things to Know

The things that you must know before trekking to Everest Three Passes are

  • You should choose the best time to go on the Everest Three Passes Trek.
  • You should be able to identify Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) during the trek.
  • You must include the additional day dedicated to acclimatization.
  • You should be well prepared and pack all the necessary gear and essentials.
  • You should maintain proper nutrition to sustain energy levels and support your physical well-being.
  • You must be mentally prepared for the trip.

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation options on the trail include trekking lodges, teahouses, and hotels. They offer a range of basic to more luxurious accommodation, allowing you to choose according to your budget and preferences. The teahouses along the route provide different options in terms of quality and price, depending on the amenities they provide.

The tea house room features twin sharing beds and simple furniture such as a table and chair. The beds have pillows and sheets; many tea houses offer additional blankets for chilly nights. Hot showers are typically available throughout the trek. You’ll find various campsites along the route if you want to camp.

Difficulty Level

The Everest Three Passes Trekking route will take you through challenging terrain and steep climbs. You will also have to cross a frightening landslide area. Climbing steep rocky hills with huge rocks will make trekking difficult. You will eventually reach your destination after navigating the tough terrain, steep hills, and a landslide area.

Throughout the trek, you’ll encounter several glaciers, most of which are relatively easy to cross. However, some particularly difficult glaciers require crampons’ assistance to navigate safely. As you travel, you’ll navigate through the melting ice, which gradually becomes thinner. So, you should start before 10 am when the sun is not high and the ice is less likely to melt.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is the major challenge regarding the difficulty of the Everest Three Passes Trek. It often refers to the issue of walking too fast at high altitudes. Altitude sickness, called Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is a common condition affecting you at high elevations. Some individuals experience altitude sickness despite being physically and mentally fit. The signs and symptoms of altitude sickness are headaches, dizziness, loss of appetite, nausea, problems sleeping, and shortness of breath.

Prevention of Altitude Sickness

  • Following the principle of climbing high and sleeping low can prevent altitude sickness.
  • You should drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco while trekking.
  • You should carry some energy bars and snacks.
  • Focus on a well-balanced diet, including Dal Bhat’s local and traditional cuisine.
  • You should immediately inform your professional guide if you identify any signs or symptoms of altitude sickness.

I had an incredible trek with Himalaya Trip and with Dawa as my guide for the Three Passes trek (without EBC)!Dawa was incredibly kind, experienced, caring, fun, and funny. I felt well taken care of and would gladly trek with him again in the future as well as recommend him to anyone I know looking for a guide. Harka (Himalaya Trip owner) met with me the day before the trip and was kind enough to loan me a sleeping bag and jacket for the trek and outlined the trip details. Dawa met me early the next morning and arranged the ride to the airport and navigation through the terminal. We had a short flight delay (maybe 3 hours) but a pretty smooth quick flight. Dawa handled all the permits and accommodations and every place we stayed was comfortable, beautiful, and had delicious meals!! I experienced some altitude sickness (nausea and light headed) in Namche and Dawa was kind enough to bring food to my room and check in on me. He also gave me lots of tips for managing altitude sickness that I never would have known. It was obvious he was very experienced and could easily tell me what things would make it worse or better including not being too close to the common room fireplaces on the way up, keeping on more layers than you think while trekking up, pro tip of wearing puffy backward for wind/warmth insulation without overheating as much, and of course the usual drinking lots of liquids, resting, and climb high sleep low. He also had diamox/acetazolamide which I was very thankful for. Also, unrelated to altitude, I wouldn’t have known without Dawa to always pass the Tibetan carved rocks and stupas on the left/clockwise and doing the route clockwise in order to be in alignment with Buddhist tradition, good luck, and the mantra of Oh Ma Ni Padme Hum. I was scared I wouldn’t be able to do the trip due to altitude sickness, but Dawa reassured me of lots of different options to make sure my body was cared for while also allowing me to have an incredible experience. Throughout the trip, it was great to see the Dawa obviously had great relationships with a lot of the people on the route. He had great rapport with other guides, porters, lodge hosts, and chefs. He also used cell service and his relationships to check on things in advance for me like route conditions, room reservations, weather status, and gear availability. Dawa made sure to check that I was fully prepared and helped me buy new shoes in Namche since mine were no longer waterproof. He also was aware of and able to tell me when and where there would be cell service and certain amenities. With rest and management of symptoms I was able to continue the trip as planned. Dawa also kindly offered to carry my snack and toiletry bag on the uptrek to lighten my load so as not to worsen the altitude sickness from more intense physical exertion. Dawa constantly assured me of the plan, alternate options, and checked to make sure I was happy with decisions being made. He set a really nice pace for me with well timed breaks and was hugely helpful in reminding me to drink water. We got in early to the villages each day. We crossed Renjo La pass and spent a night in Gokyo then skipped the rest day there to give us more itinerary options going forward and since without skipping it we were set with bad weather for Kongma La. Hiking Cho La pass felt easier than Renjo after acclimating and we walked further than the original itinerary (Dzhongla) to Thokla since we were moving fast. Based on conditions heard and information from other guides, we decided to skip Kongma La due to the two glacier treks not being well marked/tracked making it easy to get lost and due to light snow/ice covering that would have made conditions slick and dangerous. Dawa came up with an alternate plan to add in Ama Dablum base camp instead. Dawa checked multiple times to make sure I was happy with the plan and I was. It felt like a great way to avoid dangerous conditions but still get to see an extra stunning sight. Ama Dablum is one of the most striking mountains in the range to me. The new itinerary also allowed us to split the Namche to Lukla walk back into two days also allowing me to get into Lukla early the day before the trips official end so that I could have the potential option to fly out on a better weather forecast day. It was a welcome option for me due to the notoriety of Lukla airport as being dangerous, having flight cancellations/delays, and Dawa’s own story of being stuck in Lukla for a week with no flights! In the end, we still ended up flying on the day planned. Overall, I had a great time trekking with Dawa and felt very well cared for. My happiness and safety felt paramount. He was very willing to always help out and I enjoyed getting to learn about him, his trekking experience, his family, and his favorite things. His English is not perfect, he mentioned it was poor, but I thought it was pretty good and I was able to understand everything throughout the entirety of the trip! I was glad I got to spend my trip with Dawa and celebrate with him atop the passes. He was genuinely joyous and proud at us getting across the passes and happily took me to extra viewpoints to show me the best places for photos, point out wildlife, and to call and share the experience/views with folks from home. Dawa was a great guide and I would happily trek with him again in the future!

Incredible!

Hi! Im Sara, from Spain!
Good morning!
Yesterday we arrived from our 11-day trekking in Gokyo.
There were 3 people from Spain, and I don’t know how to express how happy I felt.
From the beginning, Himalaya Trip has been attentive to us, with a welcome at the hotel and explanation of the route, rental of necessary equipment, etc.
The most important thing for us has been the ease and comfort with which Ramesh (our precious guide) has taken care of us at all time.
Attentive to the food, to make sure we didn’t get cold, adapting the route day by day according to the needs of the team.

I only have words of gratitude for Ramesh, who I would recommend for any trekking in the world.
In addition to being a great guide and knowing all the mountains of Nepal perfectly, he is a great person, with a big heart.

We hope to repeat in the not too distant future and hopefully it can be with him, since he is already part of our family.
Thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart.

Thanks!!!!

Couldn’t recommend enough

Had an incredible experience doing the Mardi Himal trek with Himalaya Trip. Our guide Jay and our two porters Umesh and Masak were all simply incredible people.

I’m a photographer so always have odd requests for weird areas to access for better angles or even simply just extending time in certain areas and all requests were met with so much help from the team. Highly recommend

Mardi Himal: fantastic trek & wonderful guide

I had an amazing time trekking with Surpa, particularly as this was my first solo trek. Beautiful views doing the Mardi Himal trek over 4 days, Surpa was a great guide who organised everything so well for me, kept me well fed, supported a good pace the whole way and always cheerful. Would recommend, and I would happily have him as my guide again in the future. The organisation and booking with Himalaya Trip was great, really responsive on emails and Harka was so helpful in organising everything and meeting me in Kathmandu for a briefing before the trip. Thanks so much!

Once in a lifetime experience in the Himalayas

Our 4 day Mardi Himal Trek with guide Milan and porter Plekta was a wonderful experience. The manager Harka Gurung met with us over coffee in Kathmandu and briefed us about expectations as this was our first trek. After that our guide met us at our hotel in Pokhara, helped us rent equipment, and handled all logistics in between. Our first time in the Himalayas was unforgettable between all the unbelievable landscapes and scenery, and we were lucky to have MIlan and Plekta with us to experience it all. I can’t begin to describe how ethereal sunrise is over the base camp, but hopefully you’ll be able to experience it soon!
