Top 7 Tips to Train For Everest Base Camp Trek

Mental preparation

Everest Base Camp Trek is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Trekking to EBC can be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and the thrill and challenge of trek is strenuous. Furthermore, the trek in the remote isolation of the Khumbu region can overwhelm the strong person, and there are many challenges and difficulties; however, there are not many opportunities. Here are some ways to mentally prepare during your Everest Base Camp Trek.

Train Your Mind and Body

For the mental stability of the Everest Base Camp Trek, you need to train your mind and body. Physical training is essential, but if you also want to remain calm, you must train your body and mind. You must discipline yourself and participate in different activities to train your body and mind. Furthermore, yoga and meditation also help concentrate your mind and body.

Set Realistic Expectations

One significant way to remain calm on the high-altitude trek is to set realistic expectations of the harsh conditions you will be facing. Expecting your trek to be accessible will instead create huge disappointments, so expect the high-altitude trek to be quiet. Difficult and cater to your expectations on the same level of difficulty.

Stay Motivated and Positive

EBC trek is quite a challenging experience, especially if you are a beginner. Trekking in a high altitude, remote location away from your friends and families can make you discouraged and change your mindset to become very negative, which can harm your mental state. Hence, you have to remain positive and motivated during your EBC trek. Cherish small things like beautiful sunrises, incredible views of mountains, and successful treks to teahouses from previous days. You have to be positive and take a day-by-day approach not to get discouraged. Also, connect with your friends and families via the internet or satellite phone whenever possible.

Take Plenty Of Rest

During your long Everest Base Camp Trek trek, it is essential to know the importance of resting or acclimatization. So whenever you get the chance, make sure you rest every time. Resting or acclimatization clears your mind from tiredness and rejuvenates you for the next trek ahead. Furthermore, frequent resting helps with the possibility of altitude sickness and lets you move forward quickly.

Prepare for High Altitude

One of the biggest problems that the trekkers will face during their Everest Base Camp expeditions is the high altitude sickness. Hence, it would help to prepare for the high altitude, even before or during the trek. Make sure you are trekking high but descending to sleep. Keeping yourself hydrated is necessary to minimize the possibility of altitude sickness. Other problems that trekkers will face during high-altitude treks include changing weather conditions and freezing temperatures, so make sure you have packed appropriate clothes and are ready for any kind of weather, from sunny days to rainy nights to constant snows.

Practice Meditation and Zen

Practicing mindfulness and meditation is helpful to get ready for the Everest Base Camp Trek. These can calm your mind, reduce stress, and improve focus and concentration. Start by spending a few minutes sitting quietly and focusing on your breath each day. During your high-altitude trek, you will visit several monasteries, Ghumbas, caves, and walls where you can meditate and clear your body and mind. At high altitudes, the trekkers will often feel overwhelmed from difficulty breathing, so practicing breathing and staying calm can increase confidence among trekkers.

Nutrition and Hydration To Train for Everest Base Camp Trek

Training for Everest Base Camp is for the successful trek completion without significant hassle or health issues. The best way to prevent any health issue during your trek is by eating proper, hygenic, nutritious foods and drinking plenty of safe water. So, let’s look at ways to eat healthy diets and keep yourself hydrated throughout the trek.

Nutrition

Everest Base Camp Trek is an intense trek at a high altitude in the Himalayas, which is fierce. To get in sync with such a strenuous trek, you must be complete with energy and only be energetic by consuming nutritious products. Proteins and Carbohydrates are the best forms of nutrients that you need to drink to complete the trek without any fatigue.

During the trekking, the trekkers eat meals three times a day, which, in simpler terms, are breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are many options to eat, but you have to choose wisely to get proper nutrients from the food you eat. When trekking, you must consume products with proteins and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates provide long-lasting durability and efficiency, whereas protein offers the power to continue marching forward despite the trek’s difficulty.

Beans

Some of the meals that are filled with nutrients you can have are Dal, Bhat (Rice, Lentils, and Vegetable Curry), Eggs, Breads, Chapatis, Rotis, and Breads. Etc. You can also find menus for Western dishes like Pizzas, Burgers, Dumplings, and many more. In high altitudes, you might find meat products that are not adequately cooked, so avoiding them so you don’t feel ill is the best way. Furthermore, heavy dairy products can also make your stomach bloated and make it difficult to sleep, which is detrimental, especially during your high-altitude trek.

Hydration

Hydration is also one of the essential factors to keep yourself safe from altitude sickness. There is a high chance of dehydration in high altitudes since you will not realize you are sweating too much, but the liquid on your body is consumed more often than at lower altitudes. So make sure you drink more water than in a regular daily job. However, at a higher altitude, you will not get drinking water all the time. Taps, handpumps, rivers, ponds, etc. are not the purest form of water and are unsuitable for drinking.

Here are a few ways to purify your drinking water in the high altitude:

  • Portable Water Filters: You can carry portable water filters to purify water from suitable sources like teahouses, taps, and handpumps. LifeStraw, Sawyer Mini, and others are popular portable water filter forms.
  • Boiling and filtering: Boiling water for at least three minutes is one of the best ways to kill most germs. You will find a little place to filter and boil your water in the high-altitude trek. However, in this trek, you will stay teahouse to teahouse every day, where you will get filtered or boiling water for drinking. You can get these services in some lodges or teahouses for free, but you may have to pay extra in others.

Physical fitness requirements

The rigid training program is an essential requirement to build physical fitness. It would help to improve your physical fitness daily to strengthen your stamina. Some basic training programs must include cardiovascular or cardio training to improve your core. Here are some of the training you can participate in to improve your physical fitness.

Cardiovascular Training

Cardiovascular training is the proper training of your body to improve its overall condition. With the proper cardiovascular training, you will make your body feel accustomed to relaxing and stress less, which enables you to function correctly with less oxygen, like in the high altitude trekking. Some ways to improve your cardio are running on a treadmill, stair climbing, running up and down the hill, and carrying a backpack if you want to make it challenging.

Strength Training

The Everest Base Camp trek requires cardiovascular preparation, but strengthening your leg muscles can improve your entire experience. We advise following a training schedule incorporating strength training and trekking to get the best results. You must ensure that your complete body is in top physical condition because the journey involves 5 to 6 hours of walking while carrying a rucksack.

Was referred to Harka by a friend who had done the 12 Days EBC  Trek a few months before, and he was very easy to contact and quick to respond. We were a bit uneasy about booking with someone from the other side of the world, but Harka proved himself to be honest, professional, and reputable while organising our trip for us. Once we were in Kathmandu, he was easy to meet up with and was quick to help us out with anything we needed. Our guide, Mr. Dil, who met us in Lukla, was what really made our trip as amazing as it was. He was extremely knowledgable on the mountains and mountain passes, as well as getting us into tea houses and our flight home. He was very professional, friendly, and easy to work with, even though his English was a bit broken. Overall, it was an incredible trip, and I wouldn’t hesitate to book with Harka again. If you do the EBC, ask for Dil, he’s the man.

I booked a private trek to Everest Base Camp so it was just myself and my guide / porter trekking together for 12 days. As a solo traveller I always invest a lot of time in to researching the company I book with, it was important to me to do this with a Nepalese tour company and the previous reviews were so encouraging and positive I decided to contact Himalaya Trip to see what they had to offer.

Harka responded almost immediately despite the time difference and sent me detailed information on the Everest Base Camp trek. He answered all my questions and always replied quickly which continued to give me confidence. They were also very competitively priced compared to other local companies and along with the great reviews I had a good feeling that Harka and his team would be the ones to get me to EBC.

Harka met me at the airport, took me to my hotel and helped get me any last minute bits I needed for the trek in Kathmandu. He made everything very easy and I felt safe and reassured the whole time which is important to me as a solo female traveller.

My guide / porter was called Dil and he was the man I was spending 12 days with trekking to EBC. Dil was fantastic, he looked out for me every step of the way, regularly checking in to ensure I was ok and did everything to make my experience on the trek as comfortable and as safe as possible. Dil was so knowledgable about the area and the mountains he would point out everything along the way. Despite him speaking broken English we could quite easily chat and communicate without any problems.

The trek was an incredible experience and one of the toughest yet most amazing things I’ve ever done and part of that was down to the efficiency and professionalism of Harka and his team. I didn’t have to worry or think about a thing, just getting to EBC.

I had a great time on my walk to Everest Base Camp from Himalaya Trip Team. I have many positive comments and the main ones are: – You were very efficient and helpful before I arrived, answering all my questions promptly and effectively so I knew what to expect when I arrived. – I was met at the airport as planned, had a good briefing from you at the hotel and the hotel was comfortable. – Everything happened as planned and it was a good timetable enabling me to to walk at my own pace and to properly acclimatise to altitude on the way up. – My guide, Om Gurung, was excellent and very attentive. He obtained single accommodation for me every night and always checked that I had everything I needed before he looked after himself. When I was unwell on the way down he carefully monitored me, gave me throat tablets and did everything he could to ensure I was comfortable. – My porter, Bikas, also did a very good job and was always helpful and pleasant. – The standard of the lodges was good. The only comment is that often the washing facilities were sometimes very limited and at some lodges only consisted of a tap low down beside the toilet! This is not a comment about your company as I think it applies whichever company one uses. It is just difficult to understand why the washing facilities are often so limited and in short supply when all other features of the lodges are very comfortable! – The price of the trek was competitive compared to some companies but the standard of care was equally good.
