Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s most famous but equally complicated treks. It would help if you considered many factors while trekking the ABC trek, but food and accommodation are the factors to consider. The ABC trek is quite strenuous as you have to trek for at least 10 to 15 days and every day for about six to seven hours, so you need proper energy and a place to stay.
The ABC trek is top-rated and easy among other complicated treks in Nepal. There are many difficulties that trekkers can face during the ABC trek, such as altitude sickness, changing weather, harsh terrain conditions, etc. So if you don’t take care of food and accommodation, then these factors might make you ill and halt your trek on the stop.
Food and Accommodation during Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Food and Accommodation are two of the critical factors of trekking as they provide comfort, relaxation, and chances to rejuvenate after long days and hours of hiking every day. The bodies of trekkers need adequate energy, nutrients, and food. They also need a proper place to sleep to eliminate fatigue and tiredness.
Types of Foods
Regarding food in the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, the trekkers will have meals thrice daily. They are breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast is the critical meal of the day, starting early in the morning and before any trek. After the first portion of the trek, the trekkers stop in one of the villages with restaurants to have lunch, and in the evening, after reaching the new teahouse, they will have dinner. So let’s get into it.
Table of Contents
Breakfast
Breakfast is the most crucial meal of the day. Before beginning your trek for the first time in a day, the trekkers need to have breakfast in the teahouse they are staying in. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day when hiking. It gives you the energy you need to tackle the trails in the morning. So, never skip breakfast! Usually, you will have breakfast in the teahouse or lodge where you spend the night. Breakfast is served early, from 6 to 8 a.m. because you must start hiking early to avoid the midday sun. There is nothing like enjoying a hearty breakfast while watching the mountains light up with the morning sun.
There are plenty of options regarding breakfast from which you can choose. Nepal set breakfast is the most common meal you want early in the morning. This fixed breakfast menu has Tibetan Bread mixed with Eggs, Local Jams, Honey, etc. You can also choose from Toast, Pancakes, Porridge, Muesli, and different varieties of Egg dishes. During breakfast, you will also have options for other drinks like tea, coffee, lemon tea, and honey tea. Some trekkers might think skipping breakfast will help them move faster, which is not valid, so make sure you always have breakfast before moving in the morning.
Lunch and Dinner
Lunch and Dinner are equally important meals that trekkers need during their expeditions. After trekking for four to five years, you will stop in the certain teahouse for lunch around 12 to 1 PM. If you have hired an authorized guide, they can also take you to reputable restaurants so you can have your lunch early.
The teahouse or lodge where we stay serves dinner. After hiking, we freshen up and eat in the dining hall. Dinner is served most evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. at tea shops along the Annapurna Base Camp trail. Since it gets cold outside at night, there is a firewood stove in the center of the dining hall where we have dinner. Here are some menu options you will find during Lunch and Dinner.
Nepali Dal Bhat
Nepali Dal Bhat Tarkari is the most typical menu for lunch and dinner. This dish is made up of rice, lentils, and vegetable curry. You have options to choose from the vegetable and vegetable dishes. The trekkers can have either dish with many vegetable curry or meat options from chicken, goat, and pig.
Fried Rice
If you don’t want to enjoy the plain Dal Bhat, you have different options, such as fried rice. Like fried rice, you can also choose from vegetable and nonvegetable options. You can select from Veg Fried Rice, Chicken Fried Rice, Buff Fried Rice, and Pork Fried Rice.
Momo
Momo is a popular dish in Nepal. It is a steamed dumpling that comes in vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. You can find momos along the Himalayan routes and in many cities. The Jhol momo with spicy soup is one of the most popular options for trekkers walking in the Himalayan snowy regions.
Pizzas and Burgers
Apart from the Nepalese cuisine’s local delicacies, the trekkers can also choose from Western dishes. Some of the most common Western dishes are Pizzas and Burgers. The Nepalese have started to learn how to prepare culinary Pizzas and Burgers by visiting foreign countries and returning to settle in the Annapurna region’s hotels, lodges, and teahouses. They serve the best Pizza during this trek. You must try.
Daily Snacks
In the daily ABC trek, make sure you have purchased some snacks to consume daily. Chewing and trekking throughout the trek will keep the trek enjoyable. Small snacks like chocolate, candy, ginger, etc will keep you motivated while trekking. The day hike usually ends between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. After the hike, you can have a small snack, as dinner will be served several hours later. You can eat what you brought or ask the teahouse staff to prepare something quick, like instant noodles. Snacks are expensive at high altitudes, so bringing portable snacks such as cup noodles, protein bars, chocolate bars, or biscuits is a good idea.
Drinks
Apart from eating healthy diets, trekkers must also remain hydrated. They must avoid drinking dirty water that can be filled from the taps and the handle pumps. You must get clean drinking water and other means to hydrate your body. Keeping your body hydrated all the time will prevent you from the possibility of altitude sickness. Here are some options for drinks in the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.
Tea – Milk Tea, Black Tea, Ginger Tea, Honey Tea
Hot Chocolate
Coffee – Milk Coffee, Black Coffee, Brewed Coffee, Expresso, Americano etc in the luxury hotels.
Soft Drinks – Fanta, Sprite, Coca-cola and Slice
Juices – Natural squeezed Juices or Packaged Juices like Frooty or Real Juice
Energy Drinks – Red Bull, Gatorade, Lucozade, Monster Energy
Among the drinks, you will also find alcohol to choose from. In the Annapurna region, you can find many locally made alcoholic drinks with unique flavors and significance. There are also various internationally known beers, whiskeys, rums, vodkas, and many “Raksi,” a traditional local drink. You should be a bit careful if you are planning to drink alcohol on the high-altitude trek. Alcohol can dehydrate your body, increasing the risk of altitude sickness. So, be cautious with alcohol consumption and, if possible, avoid it entirely while climbing.
Types of Accommodation
Comfortable Teahouses
Teahouses along the ABC trail provide basic accommodation. This usually includes a bed with a mattress, a blanket, and a pillow. There is no heating in the rooms. Two people typically share the rooms , and bathroom facilities are shared. In higher altitude areas, accommodations may be more basic, and some teahouses might offer dormitory-style sleeping arrangements. The most common facilities that any teahouse can provide are twin beds, shared bathrooms, and community dining areas. The native Gurung have established teahouses in their home, believing in treating the guests as the gods.
Guest Houses are another option in terms of accommodation. These guest houses are more established and have more services than the normal teahouses. Guest houses or lodges are more expensive because they are cozier than the average homestays and guesthouses.
Some of the facilities you can find in the guest houses are single bedrooms, hot showers, easy access to the internet and WIFI. Some guest houses are even more luxurious, where you will get extra services like electric blankets. You might also have to pay extra for the room with amazing views from where you will see stunning views of the mountains.
Facilities of the Accommodation in Annapurna Base Camp Trek
The accommodation for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek ranges from hotel lodges to teahouses. Each of these means of accommodation has some standard services which will make the experience of trekkers easy and comforting. Here are some services you will get during the ABC trek.
Dining Area
Dining areas let trekkers in lodges and tea shops share stories about their adventures while eating. The dining area is heated, and a fireplace in the room boils water. Gathering around the fire to tell stories and laugh is a great way to end a tiring day. The common area has tables or benches where people can sit and eat.
Twin Beds
In most Annapurna Base Camp Trek teahouses, you will find a room with twin beds, which you have to share with the trekkers. Only in some luxurious tea houses will you find the rooms with single beds. As the altitude increases, the trek’s remoteness also increases, making trekking a bit complicated. The remoteness also shows in the teahouses you will be staying in.
Tips for Food and Accommodation During Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Trekking in a foreign country is challenging, especially when getting proper food and accommodation services. Here are some tips for food and accommodation that you might need to follow during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.
In the remote locations of the Annapurna region, make sure you carry enough cash to buy snacks that will keep your mouth busy.
Food safety standards are generally good, but using hand sanitizer before meals is essential.
Many experts recommend avoiding veg meals, eating meat products, and sticking to vegetables and fruits.
Ensure you only eat cooked food, as there are fewer facilities, hospitals, and medical centers.
Conclusion
Hence, food and accommodation are essential factors that trekkers have to be wary of during the excursions. The trekkers will mostly stay in hotels, lodges, and teahouses; however, they will have breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily.

From day one the communication and support from Himalaya trip has been exceptional. We were initially planning the trip for October 2025, but had to move it to March 2026. The management team was super understanding about the situation and we seamlessly changed plans. Our guide for the trip was Ramesh, along with two porters who made the entire journey so much easier and carefree. Everything was organised and taken care of. March being a busy season, with lodges being overbooked, Ramesh especially made sure that we were always sorted and got the best of the options available. He was very clear throughout about what to expect during the journey and how to prepare. Also took us through the most beautiful routes. During unexpected situations, we consistently felt genuine care and a sense of security around us thanks to Ramesh and the porters. I would highly recommend Himalaya trip for anyone who is considering trekking in Nepal!

Our experience with Himalaya Trip was incredible. We were guided by Ramesh who is an absolute delight and 12/10 as a guide – a trip full of laughter, great stories, and thoughtful insights into Nepal and its culture. We went as a group of 4 to Annapurna Base Camp trek and it was unforgettable as a trip. We also hired porters who were also very kind, smiley and friendly – this genuine warmth and kindness from every member of Himalaya trip company really made our trip. Ramesh was expert level guidance in everything from food recommendations, to what to wear and expect the next day in the terrain. Everything was well organized and easy to follpw. He also really made us feel safe when my sister got sick from the altitude. We really felt we experienced Nepali hospitality where we were treated as guests, welcomed, and cared for. Communication was great throughout, reliable, and easy to follow. There was everything from time for photos, rest, trekking, and challenges in between. I definitely plan on returning and hopefully doing Everest base camp with Himalaya Trips and maybe even summiting!!! Thank you Ramesh and amazing team 🙏

We had a really nice trek to ABC. Unfortunately we faced rain and then snow (30 cm). Jay, our guide, was very professional ensuring our safety and getting us down the mountain in time, and obtaining extra blankets at our booked guest houses. You could tell he had the experience needed for such situations.
I also would like to share that Harka, the tour manager, was extremely helpful and flexible with changing our itinerary and transport method as needed due to weather conditions. As important, Harka was very honest in dealing with us.
We highly recommend both of them. Enzo and Flavio

I completed the solo Annapurna Base Camp trek with Poon Hill, starting from Pokhara. It was masterfully organised by Harka, who has been amazing from the very beginning. He arranged my entire itinerary — from Kathmandu to Pokhara and the trek itself — all on short notice. I was guided by Sandeep, who provided the utmost care and support throughout the trekking journey.
We stayed in tea houses run by lovely and friendly families who treated guests like royalty. I met fellow trekkers and shared experiences, tips, and hacks along the way. I even rode a horse, which was an incredible experience.
The trek itself was moderately challenging, with regular breaks. Despite the constant rain throughout the journey, the fact that I completed the trek was an accomplishment in itself. In short, if you are able to walk 15kms a day for 5-7 hours over 4-5 consecutive days in your home country, you can do this trek.
Thank you, Harka and Sandeep, for a wonderful experience.

We are very happy to have successfully completed the Nepal ABC Trek and sincerely thank the “Himalaya Trip Private Limited” Trekking team.
Special thanks to Harka for providing detailed information before departure, arranging airport pickup and drop-off, and thoroughly explaining the itinerary.
Ramesh took great care of us throughout the journey, ensuring our meals and accommodation were well-managed. When he noticed that we were struggling with our physical stamina, he suggested an alternative route. Although it was slightly longer, the path was easier to navigate. Since the porter couldn’t always stay with us, Ramesh also helped carry some of our belongings, making it possible for us to complete the trek. His arrangements were truly flexible and considerate.
Markus and Aita always had bright smiles on their faces. They helped with our luggage, checked our rooms to ensure nothing was left behind, chatted with us along the way, and took photos with us. They gave us a sense of genuine warmth and simplicity that is hard to find in the city.
Once again, a heartfelt thanks to Harka, Ramesh, Markus, and Aita ? ?
P.S. The Himalaya Trekking team celebrated uncle and aunt’s birthdays for two consecutive days, which was truly a wonderful surprise and deeply touching.
I sincerely hope to hike with your team again in the future ?

We arranged for a 13 pax group for the ABC trek with Harka. Even with a big group size, Harka and his team took good care of us. The itinerary was customized based on our needs and fitness level. Top-notch service was provided throughout our 10 days in Nepal. Our guide, Hari did an amazing job ensuring all of us were able to cope with the altitude and long trek well. During the trip, we requested some changes to the itinerary and they were able to accommodate our last-minute request. Would totally come back to them if we are planning for EBC and recommend it to those who wish to visit Nepal.

Haari, our tour guide, was great. He is very friendly, patient, accommodating with everyone and a mountain of knowledge about the Himalayas (very very enthusiastic about EBC, haha). He was well prepared with first aids and brought us to places to get gears and stuff that we missed out before our hike. He made plans ahead and keep us informed, totally made our ABC adventure so much more enjoyable and relaxed. The porters were super helpful and thoughtful, despite carrying our bags around the mountains they keep us entertained with their carefree personalities and great dancing skills 🙂 (yeah, they partied at one of the teahouse we stayed). OH did I mentioned, one of our member left his camera at the previous teahouse we stayed and only realised when we arrived at the next accommodation (after 12 hours) and one of the porter volunteered to return and pick up the camera for our member, and I’m sure he was sprinting and down 6 red bull and came back in 5hours. We were very lucky and blessed indeed. Haari’s brother, Harka is the operation/ owner of the tour agency and he was also very kind and did a fantastic job in ensuring our last few days in Kathmandu a pleasant one. We had good conversations with everyone of them and all in all a great experience and a wonderful times in this beautiful country.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon trekking to Annapurna Base Camp and Harka was our guide. We were so pleased to have Harka as he was the perfect guide for us. Naturally he has excellent knowledge and always gently guided us into the correct decision. We were quite worried about spending so much time with someone we didn’t know. But Harka had the magic ability to know when to leave us in peace and when to spend time with us. He was very gentlemanly, with perfect manners and as I said an innate ability to know what to do. He wasn’t too distant nor too friendly. We did see other guides who didn’t get this balance right and who if they had been with us would have affected our trip for the worse. Harka was just perfect for us and I would recommend him to anyone.

In the march of 2012, my girlfriend and I took a trip to the Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal. We have hired a guide Harka Gurung , a local guide (26), who was recommended by my friends.First, he has sent us the list of things to take with us, this information is very valuable for us, since we know what to take with us. The weather conditions were pretty rough, but we did not freeze and need anything. Harka is very fond of safety, starting from the recommendations about the food and water and ending with advice was and how to pass the Avalanche area, steep slopes, and so on. He was very nice to us and told us a lot of stories about Nepali habits, culture, and history; he was always joking and did not show any signs of angriness when we were going to slow or wanted to have rest.
Harka went all the way with us and without him our travel would not have been so nice and safe.I definitely will choose home as a guide for my next trips to Nepal and recommend him to anyone who wants to feel comfortable and nice during the trek.

We met Harka in September 2010. He was going to be our trekking guide up to Annapurna Base Camp and he was more than that! He became a good friend! He is patient (he kept us going all the way up to ABC!), kind, knowledgeable, and has a real love for sharing his culture and exchanging thoughts life! We had some inspiring chats. He cares about his people, he has a heart of gold. WE would trek with him again forever, and more than that, we are still in touch because he did become one very good friend and we wish him all the best for his life. He deserves all the happiness he can get. Namaste saathi!

We booked a 7 day Annapurna Base Camp trek with Himalaya Trip in Sep. Communication when booking was excellent and they were very accommodating to fit in with our dates and pick up/drop off locations. The manager, Harka, was very quick to respond and provided good information about what to take. On arrival, Harka met us at our hotel in Kathmandu and explained the full plan for the trip giving us all our tickets and trekking passes. He also met us in the morning to ensure we got on the correct bus to Pokhara where we would meet our guide.
The guide and porter were very good: both were very friendly and couldn’t do enough to make sure we were comfortable and safe at all times. We were particularly impressed when we asked to change the plan for the last day of the trek and he gave us a few options and rebooked our accommodation and transport plan to fit. Even though the porter spoke little English he was friendly and helpful throughout.
Himalaya Trip clearly a local, family-run business and I would highly recommend booking directly with them as it was better value for money than going through an agent in the UK and also supports their local community. We will certainly use them again for future trekking adventures in Nepal.

Our little group of three were introduced to Himalaya Trip and its Founder, Harka Gurung, from another Malaysian who had trekked in Nepal in 2018.
For our trek to ABC, I found Harka and his guide, Om and his two porters, Buddhi Man and Samsher, all Gurungs from their home state, to be exceptionally professional, courteous, friendly and accommodating at all times.
We quickly warmed to the Gurungs’ easygoing nature and friendly, no-nonsense dispositions, made all the more memorable by Samsher and Buddhi Man’s mountain songs and spontaneous dancing whilst on the trail!
I cannot therefore recommend Harka, Om, Samsher and Buddhi Man more highly for your next trip to this beautiful land as Nepal Hidden Treks will definitely be my first port of call when I next visit, hopefully with my children.
The defining feature of Harka and his men are that this is a family business for the Gurung tribe which places employment, professional standards and career opportunities on equal if not higher measure than commercial profit, which ultimately benefits the lucky client.

An amazing trek to ABC (Annapurna Base Camp). The views of Fishtail and Annapurna were extraordinary and the hiking through Ghandruk was beautiful. The guide (Milan) and the porter (Misak) were excellent and we had a great time chatting to them in English (and also in Nepalese!) They were very kind, offering us fruits after dinner and cushions to sit on when we took breaks. The trip was very well organised and all the hotels had been organised and booked in advance. We highly recommend taking this trek with Himalaya Trip.

So we hope our guide on accommodation and food will help you make the best decision. Next time you are exploring the Annapurna region, make sure you stay in ideal accommodation and avoid eating foods with caffeine and alcohol products.
FAQs
Should I drink coffee during my Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
Trekkers should consume coffee in a moderate amount. You can drink coffee at lower altitudes; however, if you start climbing higher altitudes, you might have to avoid caffeine as it can cause dehydration, which leads to altitude sickness. If you have a previous case of altitude sickness, make sure you avoid caffeine from early on.
Why should you avoid drinking alcohol during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
Drinking alcohol lowers your body temperature, which can lead to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and Hypothermia. These conditions are severe and common health risks for trekkers. Alcohol also causes confusion and delusion among trekkers, which is why experts recommend avoiding them.
What is the average daily cost of staying in a teahouse in the ABC trek?
The average daily cost of a teahouse per person ranges from $3 to $20 per night. The cost of the teahouse is based on the location you are staying and the facilities they have compared to other teahouses. The teahouse in the ABC trek is a bit more expensive than other remote locations.
Is there WIFI in Annapurna Base Camp?
While wifi and internet facilities are available in some tea houses along the Annapurna Base Camp trek, trekkers should be prepared for limited and unreliable connectivity. The lower area of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is established with more connections so that you will have decent internet connectivity.
Can you camp during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
Yes, you can camp during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek; however, if you plan to camp, you might have to carry all your belongings from teahouse to teahouse, which can be more challenging. If you plan to camp, hire porters to carry your luggage.
