Overview of Khumai Danda Trek

The Khumai Danda Trek or Khumai Ridge Trek is a newly opened, short trek route near Pokhara. The off-the-beaten trail takes you to the less-explored areas of the Annapurna region. Unlike the commercialized trails of Nepal, this trek offers a refreshing escape into the quiet, scenic ridges and serene Himalayan landscapes. Despite being easily accessible from Pokhara, the Khumai Danda route offers a raw trekking experience.

Khumai Danda Korchon Trek starts with a two-hour drive from Pokhara to Saripakha via Ghachok. From the trailhead, you will gradually start to ascend through traditional villages with green farmlands and dense forests of rhododendrons. You will pass by villages such as Hile Kharka, Chichemle Kharka, Khumai Danda, Sari Paha, and more. Most Gurung communities reside along the Khumai Danda Trekking route, along with Brahmins and Chhetris. During the trek, you will have the chance to experience the vibrant culture of these communities and their friendly hospitality.

The trekking trail takes you through lush green hills and rhododendron forests that bloom in red, pink, and white during spring. As you gradually climb to higher altitudes, the landscape opens up to ridgelines. It also offers beautiful and expansive views of Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Lamjung Himal, and more. The highlight of the trek is Korchan Danda (3,682 m). It offers a mesmerizing view of the surrounding peaks and the landscape. Another notable viewpoint is the Khopra Danda itself. Watching golden sunset and sunrise from these viewpoints will be memories that will stay with you long after the trek journey is over.

The Khumai Danda Trek is a perfect alternative to the Mardi Himal Trek or the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. It is far from commercialization and mass tourism. With serene, off-beat trails, gorgeous scenery, spectacular Himalayan panoramas, and cultural encounters, the trek is ideal for trekkers of all levels, including beginners. It is a unique and rewarding journey that does not require long days or extreme altitude risk. Experience the untouched Himalayan beauty and authentic culture with the 3 Days Khumai Danda Trek with Himalaya Trip.

Why Choose Khumai Danda Trek?

Aside from being a new trekking route, there are many reasons to choose the Khumai Danda Trek. Here are some major reasons:

Less crowded and more peaceful

The Khumai Danda Trek is a hidden gem of the Annapurna region. Compared to the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, or even the Mardi Himal Trek, it is less well-known and less explored. As a result, there are very few trekkers on the Khumai Danda Trekking trail. It is an opportunity to experience deep solitude and mindfulness. You will walk through the lush forests, peaceful villages, and serene ridges. You can enjoy the soothing mountain breeze while listening to birds chirping and to the sound of flowing rivers. The absence of crowds allows you to soak in the tranquility fully. You can enjoy the gorgeous views of the landscapes and mountains without rushing.

Easy grade difficulty

The 3 Days Khumai Danda Trek is designed for trekkers who do not want extreme challenges but still want a Himalayan trekking experience. The trekking trail is easy grade and manageable even for beginners. You will walk on the well-marked paths with gentle ups and downs. There are some steep sections, but nothing too demanding. Similarly, the moderate altitude means there is a low risk of altitude sickness. Anyone with basic fitness can join the trek without much hassle. You can get a thrilling trek experience without the extreme fatigue or altitude risk that often comes with a demanding route.

Short but rewarding adventure

The Khumai Danda Trek is just a three-day journey. It is short but is packed with adventure, stunning scenery, and cultural experiences. In just a few days, you will trek on the ridge-to-valley landscapes. Trekking through the forest of rhododendrons, you will pass by traditional villages and walk along the ridgelines. Likewise, you can enjoy a close, panoramic view of the Himalayan peak. Usually, it takes longer days to experience such a diverse landscape and mountain views. Khumai Danda makes it possible in just a few days. For those with limited time but seeking a rewarding, meaningful mountain trek, the Khumai Danda Trek is a good choice.

Wildlife and raw nature

The Khumai Danda Trekking trail lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area. The area is the largest protected area in Nepal, covering 7,600 sq. km. It is home to over 1,200 plant species, 100 mammal species, 470 bird species, and around 40 reptile and amphibian species. The largest rhododendron forest of the country also lies in the conservation area. Thus, the Khumai Danda Trek trail is a haven for nature lovers. During the trek, you will pass through lush rhododendron forests and witness diverse flora. If you are lucky, you may even spot colorful birds, langurs, deer, or others. The untouched nature of Khumai Danda is also an opportunity to connect with the raw Himalayan beauty.

Authentic cultural experiences

The Khumai Ridge Trek may be short, but you will get to encounter authentic Nepalese culture. It provides a glimpse of Gurung culture, traditions, and customs. On the trail, you may come across friendly villagers carrying firewood and fodder in dokos or herding cattles. They welcome you warmly, greeting you with a smile and a “Namaste.” You will stay at locally-run teahouses with rustic facilities and warm communal halls. More than just a tourist, you will be welcomed as a guest. Along with enjoying the warm hospitality, you can interact with villagers, hear their stories, and taste a delicious local meal. Depending on the time of year, you may also experience festivals and celebrations.

Cost-effective trekking option

For backpackers and trekkers looking for an adventure that will not break their bank accounts, the 3 Days Khumai Danda Trek is the perfect destination. Popular trails tend to cost more due to commercial charges. However, Khumai Danda is off the main trekking map. It means that you will avoid those high commercial charges. From stays at local teahouses serving authentic meals to guides and porters, the service charges are not inflated. The trek offers an excellent value for money and an authentic experience. Every penny feels like it was worth it. Additionally, the short duration reduces costs. It is a perfectly affordable and truly worthwhile trip for every type of trekker.

Your 3 Days Khumai Danda Trek journey begins with a drive from vibrant Pokhara city to Saripakha via Ghachok. The vehicle drives northwest, passing through charming rural areas. You will pass alongside rivers, small villages, and terraced farmlands. First, you will drive to Ghachok. It is a beautiful Gurung village located above the Seti River Valley. While driving past the Ghachok, you will see traditional stone houses and locals working in the farms. Then, the road becomes more rugged and narrower. It heightens the sense of thrill. You will drive past scenic greenery, and the mountains become more visible in the distance. Reaching Saripakha, your trek to the Khumai Danda begins.

The trekking trail starts with a gentle ascent, passing through small settlements and terraced fields. Gradually, you will enter a dense forest of rhododendrons and oaks. The path also becomes more offbeat. Along the way, you will cross small streams and natural springs over wooden bridges. As you go higher, the mountain air becomes cooler and fresher. You will climb steadily to Hile Kharka. The area is an open pasture surrounded by forest. From here, the trek route becomes slightly steeper. The forest becomes thinner and more adventurous. Similarly, you can catch a glimpse of distant peaks and surrounding hills.

You will traverse a remote trail, so it feels untouched and quieter. There are very few trekkers on the trail, and the human activity is also less. You can hear birds chirping while walking through the off-the-beaten path. The landscape also gradually opens into a wide grazing area as you approach Chichemle Kharka. Upon reaching the settlement, you will get your first clear view of the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre. Similarly, you can have sweeping views of the lush, green hills. On day 2, you will wake up in the crisp mountain air and serene atmosphere of Chichemle Kharka. After breakfast, you will continue your Khumai Danda Trek route. The trekking trail takes you through a thinning forest and gradually gains elevation. With every step, the forest gives way to shorter shrubs and open slopes. Then, after a while, you will start walking along a ridge. It takes you to Khumai Danda or Khumai Ridge. The ridge is a stunning viewpoint offering close views of Mount Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, and Hiunchuli.

The Khumai Danda area is open, unlike the forest-covered trail. On one side, the steep valley drops sharply, while on the other, rolling green hills stretch far into the distance. After enjoying the view for a while, you will ascend a little further to Korchon Viewpoint. The last stretch of today’s trek takes you through rugged alpine terrain with more open ground. Due to the altitude gain, your pace may slow down. Finally, you will reach Korchon, and the panoramic views of the towering snow-capped peaks unfold before you. If the timing is right, you can enjoy gorgeous sunset views from here. You will spend the night at a teahouse in Korche.

Can I Combine Khumai Danda With the Mardi Himal Trek?

Absolutely! You can combine the Khumai Danda Trek with the Mardi Himal Trek. The Khumai Danda Trek takes about 3 days and takes you through lush forests, ridges, and alpine pastures. On the other hand, the Mardi Himal Trek takes around 5 days. It takes you to a higher altitude, and the trail is more challenging. You can combine both treks to create a 7- to 8-day itinerary that allows you to explore two remote areas of the Annapurna region.

You can first start with the Khumai Danda Trek. Take a drive from Pokhara to Saripakha, then trek to the Korchon viewpoint via Khumai Danda. Then, you descend to Saripakha and return to Pokhara. Another option is to take a short transfer to Lekhpat or Deurali. Depending on your preference, you can rest overnight in Pokhara or drive directly to the Mardi Himal trailhead. From here, you can start the second phase. The Mardi Himal Trekking trail also takes you through off-the-beaten path. You will traverse forests of rhododendrons and oaks to alpine meadows. The highest point of Mardi Trek is the Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,500 m.

When you combine two treks into one, you will need moderate fitness. The trekking days are longer, and the maximum altitude is also higher. Trekkers must prepare physically and mentally for the trek. Although more challenging, combining the treks makes it more adventurous and enriching. The trek is better suited to intermediate trekkers. You will go from quiet ridges of Khumai to dense forests and the base camp of Mardi Himal. Since both the trekking trails lie within the Annapurna Conservation Area, you will need an ACAP and a TIMS card.

Combining the Khumai Danda Trek with the Mardi Himal Trek creates a unique and thrilling experience. It offers a seamless balance of off-the-beaten-path trails, peaceful trails, spectacular scenery, and panoramic mountain views. It is ideal for trekkers who want solitude and the epic Himalayan adventure.

Permits Required for Khumai Danda Trek

Trekkers must obtain two permits for the Khumai Danda Trek, which are as follows:

Trekker’s Information Management System Card (TIMS)

TIMS Card is a government-mandated registration system issued by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) in Kathmandu or Pokhara. It helps track trekkers and ensure their safety in emergencies such as accidents, landslides, and weather changes. Similarly, it helps authorities regulate the number of trekkers in trekking regions to avoid over-tourism. The fees from the TIMS support local economies and promote sustainable tourism practices. The TIMS Card costs:

  • SAARC Nationals: NPR 1,000 per person
  • Non-SAARC Nationals: NPR 2,000 per person

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

The Khumai Danda Trek route falls inside the Annapurna Conservation Area. Since the Nepalese government protects the conservation area, trekkers must obtain a permit to access the trail. This permit is known as the Annapurna Conservation Area Entry Permit (ACAP). NTB also issues the ACAP in Kathmandu or Pokhara. The fees collected from permits are used to maintain the trail and infrastructure, support wildlife conservation, and support local communities. The ACAP costs:

  • SAARC Nationals: NPR 3,000 per person
  • Non-SAARC Nationals: NPR 1,000 per person

Note: Our 3 Days Khumai Danda Trek package includes all trekking permits.

Difficulty Level & Who Can Do This Trek

The difficulty level of the Khumai Danda Trek is easy, with daily walking hours of 5-6 hours on average. It is one of the most accessible Himalayan treks, suitable for all trekkers, including beginners. The trek is short and takes only 3 days. Similarly, the highest point of the trek is the Korchon viewpoint at 3,682 m. Compared to other treks in the Annapurna region, it is moderate and manageable.

The route has a gradual ascent and descent section with some steep sections. Luckily, there are no extreme climbs that are too demanding. The route combines gentle forest paths, alpine ridges, and open pasture lands. But the terrain is off the beaten path and rugged. There are also a few rocky and narrow ridge sections, but those with good fitness can overcome them comfortably. Due to the moderate elevation, altitude sickness is unlikely. Some trekkers may experience mild altitude sickness symptoms if they ascend too quickly. However, the risk is extremely low.

Due to its manageable difficulty, the Khumai Danda Trek is perfect for beginners looking for a short, easy introduction to the Himalayas. Likewise, it is ideal for families. The moderate trail and traditional villages offer a family-friendly atmosphere. Children and senior family members with basic fitness can do the trek. Families can enjoy a safe trek while also gaining insight into the rich local culture. The trek is also suitable for adventure seekers with limited time. They can take a short Himalayan escape without committing to a longer duration. Khumai Danda Trek feels like an authentic adventure but is gentle enough for trekkers with good fitness and endurance.

What Accommodation Is Available on the Khumai Danda Trek?

Basic teahouses and guesthouses are available on the Khumai Danda Trek route. The accommodations along the trail are simple and run by the local families. Due to the remote location, the infrastructure in the area is limited. These accommodations offer only basic and limited amenities. There are no luxury hotels, but these basic accommodations are warm and comfortable.

Most teahouses and guesthouses have small and simple shared rooms with beds, mattresses, and blankets. Private rooms with attached bathrooms are rare. Most accommodations have communal bathrooms and Asian-style squat toilets. The rooms have poor insulation, so it may be cold at night. Hence, a sleeping bag is highly recommended. Heating facilities are often limited to communal dining spaces. Usually, there are massive stone stoves that heat the room. Facilities like internet, hot showers/water, and charging are available, but at an additional fee.

Despite their simplicity, the teahouses and lodges offer authentic hospitality. They also offer a closer look at local culture and lifestyle. The meals are simple, and menus may be limited, but the food is prepared in a home-cooked style. It lets you get a taste of authentic Nepalese cuisine. After the day’s trek, you can sit at the communal hall in front of the warm stove, listening to the locals’ stories. During your time at these teahouses and guesthouses, you will get an authentic Himalayan experience that is completely different from commercialized trekking trails.

Incredible!

Hi! Im Sara, from Spain!
Good morning!
Yesterday we arrived from our 11-day trekking in Gokyo.
There were 3 people from Spain, and I don’t know how to express how happy I felt.
From the beginning, Himalaya Trip has been attentive to us, with a welcome at the hotel and explanation of the route, rental of necessary equipment, etc.
The most important thing for us has been the ease and comfort with which Ramesh (our precious guide) has taken care of us at all time.
Attentive to the food, to make sure we didn’t get cold, adapting the route day by day according to the needs of the team.

I only have words of gratitude for Ramesh, who I would recommend for any trekking in the world.
In addition to being a great guide and knowing all the mountains of Nepal perfectly, he is a great person, with a big heart.

We hope to repeat in the not too distant future and hopefully it can be with him, since he is already part of our family.
Thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart.

Thanks!!!!

Mardi Himal: fantastic trek & wonderful guide

I had an amazing time trekking with Surpa, particularly as this was my first solo trek. Beautiful views doing the Mardi Himal trek over 4 days, Surpa was a great guide who organised everything so well for me, kept me well fed, supported a good pace the whole way and always cheerful. Would recommend, and I would happily have him as my guide again in the future. The organisation and booking with Himalaya Trip was great, really responsive on emails and Harka was so helpful in organising everything and meeting me in Kathmandu for a briefing before the trip. Thanks so much!

Once in a lifetime experience in the Himalayas

Our 4 day Mardi Himal Trek with guide Milan and porter Plekta was a wonderful experience. The manager Harka Gurung met with us over coffee in Kathmandu and briefed us about expectations as this was our first trek. After that our guide met us at our hotel in Pokhara, helped us rent equipment, and handled all logistics in between. Our first time in the Himalayas was unforgettable between all the unbelievable landscapes and scenery, and we were lucky to have MIlan and Plekta with us to experience it all. I can’t begin to describe how ethereal sunrise is over the base camp, but hopefully you’ll be able to experience it soon!
